Does it look like this?

I used both batteries individually on the box, and it spins at the same speed as both of them at the same time. I guess they are both fine.

and old vs. new diffs.

If it spins at the same speed then the motor isn't getting all 14 volts. You have it wired up wrong. I can't tell from the pics, but thats what it seems like. You have to have the "bridge" or "jumper" like Dave said. Its like wiring the batts in a series.

and I have no idea what any of this stuff means.

Dave, YGPM.
It is supposed to look like Dave's picture. If it is hooked up in parallel it will still work if one battery isn't giving it juice. It won't work if one battery isn't giving it juice if it is in series.
once you wire that box in series you won't need a new box or even a starter box motor anymore.
The way you have it wired you are getting only 7.2 volts ...follow Daves diagram and will produce 14.4

Exactly. You are running parallel, not in series.
nvm I see what i missed
Slightly different...

The purple wire is the jump wire that will give you 14.4
Nice diagram Jerry!!
It's crude, but gets the point acrosss. I thought it may make more sense if Rob saw it w/ the parts he was familiar with...Idea
Bingo Jerry! I was gone for the last 2 hours, but that is what I just paintshopped up as well. Rob, just cut one red wire and one black wire between the battery connectors and the splice toward the motor, and join them to make the jumper.
