Waukegan?
#1
Hey guys,

I've been thinking about finding out about/getting permission to, bash at the old "Fun Harbor" facility in the Lakehurst area (I live next door to it). They had an old Go-Kart track that would be AWESOME to run on, and since I see people going into the old park (through the fence, of course..lol) to go skating, I don't see why they wouldn't let us RC guys into there ??

Let me know if any of you are interested, the more of us there are, the more fun we'll have, that track was HUGE, so it should be able to accomodate quite a large number of cars at once Wink

Review online...

Fun Harbor has been closed for years and from what I have seen I highly doubt it will re-open again. It was very similar to a Rink-Side Sports or a Chuck-E-Cheese's, but with outdoor miniature golfing, go-karting, and batting cages. Inside I believe there was an arcade, pool tables, and a kiddie play area. Since its closure, the outdoor area has suffered major damage, including plant overgrowth, heavy damage to the mini-gold structures, scenery panels falling off, garbage being thrown into the go-kart track, and a portion of the fence was damaged when a car crashed into it and has not been repaired in years. Sometime after 2002 the City of Waukegan has built a water storage facility in the parking lot of Fun Harbor, so its chances of re-opening are very slim.

Fun Harbor has been closed for a VERY long time.

As for the "Water Storage Facility", I do not see one anywhere near there, BUT, I can tell you they gutted the arcade, and it would make for an AWESOME indoor track (If anyone would be allowed into the interior). And for the track, if it does have trash on it, it would have to be cleaned up, but would make for an AWESOME place to run Stadium Trucks, Monster Trucks, and Buggies (Possibly TC, if the track itself isnt damaged). As for the parking lot out front, it does have grass coming through the cement in scattered spots all over, but would be fun, again for off-road cars Wink

Also, the parking lot in the rear looks clean, will be taking my drift car out there tonight to give it a test run.

Below is a link to an overhead view of the jewel parking lot:

Bear in mind, the cars no longer are parked there as jewel closed in November '06

Also, satallite shot of "Fun Harbor" (I live in the brown apartments to the left of it), the track looks fine to me, but the imagery is I am sure at least 9 months old:

Okay, went and checked it the outside (of "Fun Harbor"), and the fence to the go-kart track, from the front parking lot, is wide open (One could, in theory, walk right to the track)

Went bashing at the old "Jewel" parking lot this past sunday,
it is VERY nice, no pebbles that I could see, and its HUGE
(and I mean it, it is INSANELY HUGE).
