Bashing in -20 degree weather
#1
My RB323 would not start this weekend! The pull start would just catch, but not rev up. Once I got it to keep running, ( by always giving throttle) it never kicked to 2nd gear. Is this just because of the weather this weekend in Chitown? Should I just use the 2.5R on these brutally cold days, or should my 323 work fine, just the tuning is way outta wack? Please respond! I couldn't play at all this weekend, so am going thru withdrawl.

Is it just a bad idea to bash in this cold?

I wouldn't even think of bashing in super cold weather. Hard to start engines is one thing, but I don't find it any fun to stand outside and freeze my ass off just to run my truck for 10 minutes, lol.

Plus, plastic becomes real brittle in real cold conditions. You'll suffer more breakage when it's cold out. Also it's much harder to keep an engine up to proper temps in the cold weather.

Personally, I wouldn't drive my trucks outside unless the temp was at least 40* outside.

Well, my friend and I made the mistake of getting into this hobby about a month before christmas, so we don't even know how we will run in warm weather! Thanks for the advice, I guess I'll wait a bit longer.

yeah your motor sounds like it was just too rich on the top needle. Bogging down, stalling, and not switching to second sounds like the motor was getting too much fuel.

If you broke your engines in when it was below 60F out, there's a high likelyhood that they won't tune/run for crap when the temps warm up outside. You might want to start saving for new "summer" engines.

When you run them in the winter, the sleeve doesn't get hot enough consistantly enough and it tends to wear out faster. It will work fine for a winter engine when the temps are low, but won't hold a tune and flame out in the summer because of the excess wear. I wouldn't toss it, but I'd suggest getting another to break-in and run during spring/summer for the spring/summer/fall months.

I broke it in in about 50 degree weather. Will this be a problem?

Not if you kept the temps up. I broke in my Revo at 45* temps and just had a papertowel rubberbanded around the head. It's been fine. Runs good in hot and cold weather. If you can, use a temp gun and monitor those engine temps...best $25 you can spend...

Much below 60 isn't optimal... unless you take precautions.

The only time I broke in (or began breaking in) an engine when it was around 30F out, I used those chemical hand warmers ziptied to the engine head the whole time I was out. I ran about 8 tanks through the engine and it was fine when spring finally showed up.

With the hand warmers ziptied to the head, the head temp at the GP never got below 80F during the cool downs. It made it easy to get the engine up to 210 for a proper break-in temp as well.

I probably only have about 10 tanks through it, including break-in, so Damage cannot be that bad, can it? It still seems like a new engine. I am going to wait til its at least 55 out to bash again.
