A little computer help....
#1
Ok, here's the deal. I picked up an AMD AthlonXP 2800 / motherboard combo for $100. I realized that my old RAM simms wouldn't work, so I went out and picked up some Kingston DDR SDRAM dimms, 2 @ 256mb each. When I tried installing everything, I double checked all the connections, tried to power up the computer, and it would not POST (Power on self test), instead, it would beep once every 2-3 seconds. Does anyone have any idea what could be the problem?

so it didnt turn on at all? You couldnt load the bios or anything? Did you uninstall your old motherboard drivers before you switched (very important to do if you dont want to format)?

I was using a freshly formatted HD. It would not do more than just beep. The BIOS never loaded, it never went through the self test.

This sucks, I am using a 733Mhz computer, and have an AMD 2800+ sitting here....

Ok, stupid question. Do you know for sure if it's a good motherboard?

It was brand new in box, so I am assuming it is good. Fry's Electronics in Downers Grove was having a Grand opening Sale, and had a lot of great deals....

i bet you that either the motherboard is bad and/or the memory is the wrong kind. Most likely the memory is the wrong kind. What kinda mb is it?

MB is an ECS Elitegroup N2U400-A It is the motherboard that came with the processor. I took the RAM back to Best Buy, and called Fry's today. They told me to install the board, and bring it by, (Which I plan on doing Friday). They will diagnose and fix any problems I am having.

ecs could be your problem. Those boards never lasted me. Now i understand how you got that very cheap deal. But at least there gonna look at it.

Got an e-mail from ECS today, with a link to the Bios beep codes . The site offers the codes to many different BIOS errors, so I have posted it here. According to the list, my problem was the memory, which is what I thought was the problem. Thanks for the input guys.

All better..... I took it all in today, (full story in Showmerc's driver section), Exchanged EVERYTHING, had them post test it before I left. Compared to my 730Mhz Dinosaur, this thing FLIES.....
