We talked on the phone the other day. I have Cen Matrix 1/8 buggy, Revo, Savage, XTM XLB and DM-1, Lightning Stadium 10 and CRT.5 all converted to brushless lipo. I'm just getting ready to start on a Cen MatrixTR truggy conversion as a winter project. I'd be glad to show you what I've done sometime and even help you out with a conversion if your interested. Like Nick said, rc-monster.com forum is the largest 1/8 scale conversion knowledge base anywhere Ive found. Days of good reading there if you want your head to spin around all of the details.

I will probably be out in oakbrook at the kohls parking lot on friday with the DM-1 and the 1/8 buggy if you want to stop by. There is usually a decent group of guys out there running. (it keeps getting to be a thinner and thinner crowd now that its getting cold though) I usually don't get out there until 9:30 or so by the time I get home from work and then get packed up and out there, but I'll be there unless its raining. Might be one of the last times of the year for me before I pack it in for the winter.

BTW nick. I went out to LH a couple times last winter on the indoor track just to get in some winter running. They didn't mind my lipos at all, but I wasn't racing, just practice nights. Unfortunately getting all the way out there is rather tough for me so it rarely happens. If it was closer Id be there alot. If you are ever planning to head down there LMK. I wouldn't mind meeting up w/ you and visit my old motor.Wink

Now that im reading this, was it you there yesterday with the cen?

Guy's I was talking to Dan over at RC products desgins, and he said that the Novak sysetm isn't recomended for the 8th scale cars. Also every one who was racing the electric 8th scales were useing the Mamba Max ESC.

did he say why? I read on there they are using the larger 550 motors. Usually novak has their stuff together. Maybe outclassed this time?

Im sure novak wouldn't release a 1/8 conversion kit for it of they didnt test it and find it to work well. Why wouldnt the Novak HV system work? It works fine for an emaxx and that is about the same weight as a 1/8 buggy. Ive used the Novak HV Maxx system in an emaxx and it was very smooth with enough power. The sensorless brushless systems are more powerfull, but more power isnt necessarily better on the track. The smoothnes of the Novak system could be an advantage. I'm sure that Dan is going to tell you that the Novak kit and system is no good. He wants you to buy his conversion kit and run the Mamba Max/Feigao system that it is designed to accomodate. Dont get me wrong, that not meant to be a slam on Dan or rcproductdesigns. Ive talked to dan and even bought some stuff from him, but if I were in business and now looking at a big company like Novak entering a market that in the past had very little cometition, Id be worried and saying that too.

Yes, many people are using the Mamaba Max Speed control for their 1/8 electrics, but it is really intended for 1/10 vehicles so its pushing the capabilities of the Mamba Max, but it does work. (I'm running the MM ESC in my electric XB8-EC now) There is no way you could run the Mamba Max motor in a 1/8. It would overheat in no time with that kind of load on it. The people using the Mamba Max are using the Mamba Max speed control with a Feigao 540XL, or Lener 1940 or 1950 sized motor. The reason people are using anyway is becasue it is half the price of a ESC that is more specifically designed for a 1/8 application. The downside of the Mamba Max is that they wont run the best motor out there. The Neu motors are 4 pole and the Neu 1515 or 1512 size motors are by far the best motor for the 1/8 applications. Cool running an crazy powerful. But they require a better speed conrol than the Mamba Max to run it. Hopefully the Mamba Monster Max is released in January (thats the date they are giving now but who knows with Castle, they never make their dates) and then there will be a drop in solution with no messing around.

I've been running eletric 1/8 buggies, truggys, revos, and savages for a few years already and its finaly about to go mainstream which will be nice. Up till now i have had to custom make everything. Itll be nice to just buy a kit and toss in a pre set motor speed control combo and just run it.

BTW, Novak is releaseing conversion kits, but they have been available for a while from RC-Monster.com and rcproductdesigns.com for a while. I prefer the rc-monster stuff to the rcproductdesigns stuff. It seems a little better designed to me, but... the rcproduct designs are complete kits with battery trays and all speciffically designed for the vehicals. All of this will be obsolete soon anyway. It wont be long before the big companies are designing 1/8 specifically designed to run electric. I have heard more tha one rumor about more than one of the big mainstream companies being hard at work on factory electric 1/8ths. I'll bet that by the end of 2008 there will be a factory 1/8 available.

Wow... sorry about writting a book here.

The Novak system just runs way too hot (they were first useing it, but found it doesn't work that great). Also there is a person I race with that tried it, but they found that it took 3 fans just to keep it running for 10min, and if one fan failed the system got way to hot and shut off. And with the MM people are running for about 20-25 min at race pace (although they still need one fan as that system was made for 10th scales, and not 8th scales).

I have seen how the Novak system works in person, and I was talking with the guy's who race every other weekend (and I was watching them race, as well as racing 4wd buggy on sat.) Also I would say the electric 8th scale was mainstream in Ann Arbor, MI.

Also there are 3 guy's at my local track that might race out at LH some time next year (08) durring the current indoor season who have the electric 8th scales, and a few more that are buliding one. I will let you guy's know when we plan on making a trip out there to race (it will be on a sat as some of will run the other electric calsses as well) Wink

So who here should I gotot to get the right info I need to make sure i get thye right equiptment for my set up. This is not a conversion. It is the MRC Thunder King I had being totally redesigned and made with a complete metal gear tranny by RC4wd.com - The Ultimate Site for RC Off-Road Enthusiast! and carbon fiber parts by Welcome to OutFrontFrames. It will be the same set up as before only better fitted custom made parts all over to handle the whatever comes my way attitude. I just want to make sure I can compete with this in a race for speed and endurance, last the lenght of the mains, and keep going afterwards without problems. This is what it looked like before and it ran great for 10-12 minutes at 28 mph with 2 titans, Novak Super Duty and 2 3300 Nimh's. and it is ONLY a 2WD, This is what it looked like last so information is a must for this build. I have everything so far being made or designed, but the final steps obviously will be a good motor, esc, and anything else I shouils need to be atop of the game.[Image: MRC3rdevo007.jpg]

The Novak system defintly does run on the hot side. But the key to making it work is gearing. If its overheating its geared to high. I'm sure novak will come out with gearing recomendations like they did for the emaxx. The Mamba Max will overheat if you overgear it too. I'm not pushing the Novak stuff or bashing the Mamaba Max Speed control setup (I'm running that in my Brushless Xray XB8-EC), I'm just saying that the Novak should work fine if set up properly.

If you want the best system currently available get a new MGM Expert+ 160/18 and Neu 1515 motor. You can drive all day, pack afer pack with 20-25 minutes run time on a 5000mah lipo pack and never have to stop with that setup. Of course you are talking $750 for the motor and speed control combo. A bit pricey... but you get what you pay for. I'm running that MGM/Neu combo in on of my buggies and neither the motor or speed control ever gets more than slightly warm.

Here are a couple pictures of my converted Xray XB8-EC and Cen Matrix.

Sweet looking truck. I've never seen one of those before.

Go to the rc-monster.com forums and post up those pictures with that same question. They will help you pick the right combo. There are a ton of guys over there that really know what they are doing with the large scale electrics.
