Dorm Audio Help
#1
Well I am decent with larger home audio but need some guidance for a nice sounding setup for my dorm that won't run me a few $k to get done. I was/may still be, picking up some JBL Pro Audio towers and subs along with crown amps, but I wouldn't want to take those out here to school anyway. I am more looking for a nice crystal clear set of monitor speakers and maybe a small sub, depending on the low frequency output of the monitors. What should I look for speaker wise and then what to power them? (Or should I just look for some self powered ones?? I think I found some nice M-Audio ones for around $250....)

Something tells me Ian will be one of the first to reply on this..... let me know.

Thanks guys.

Any interest in a pair of 12" Cerwin-Vega subs (rated to 500w ea) in gray ozite covered cabinets? They are ported enclosures with great output and solid (not sloppy) low end response.

BTW.

I'm a pro audio/video engineer by trade. I've been designing all sizes of sound reinforcement and video systems for 15 years now. We do sound systems all over the midwest including stadiums (including Wrigley Field), major churches, auditoriums, performing arts centers, automated board rooms, etc. I have access to virtually all brands worth owning including Crown, QSC, EAW, JBL, and hundreds more audio & video products.

I might be able to help you out on some of those items.

a couple of marshall stacks and say maybe a Les Paul would sound very good in your dorm room Big Grin

btw, I'm replacing some home audio this week, I may have some left overs that you can snag cheap (tuner, speakers)

Yeah I'm looking for some deals. It would be nice to blast out the entire residence hall for fairly cheap, but if I need to pick loud or clear, clear it is. If I could get close to a whole setup at once that would be nice. If you guys have stuff to sell along with your reccomendations you can either post pics here or PM them to me, either way. Let me know what you are looking to get as well.....

Thanks for the help matt.... but no way. I won't buy a plug and play system like that. I am talking more along the lines of studio speakers that they use in recording studios, or a small tower setup.

FRJ - I may have what you need.. I have two sets of bookshelf speakers (old school) that I'm thinking are going to end up not being used, I think one set is JBL's and don't remember the other set for sure...

when I was in the Navy, I used them in the barracks, it was no problem for me to crank the volume and let everyone on the floors above and below me hear what I was listening too... they play loud and clear (my biggest hangup is clarity)

let me see what happens, new stuff will be in tomorrow and I'll get an idea of what I can use and need to get rid of...

Try and stay at least mostly on topic please. If it were even audio related but we jumped from speakers to bashing RC's.....

dude definatly get these. There plug in computer speakers but if you can get them to work for your needs I wouldnt hesitate to get these. Definatly some of the best sound ive ever heard. Really loud and its crystal clear clarity no matter were the volume is at. Plus the sub delivers awesome bass. My whole house vibrates when I got the sub all the way turned up.

I looked, thought I had the JBL's, but they are Altec Lansing's the JBL's must be over at the folk's house in storage (they'll never be found probably)

I'm thinking I want to keep the Altecs..

How much would you be looking for for the Yamaha's?? And right now I only have 60 watts to power them with.... how would that work?? That is why I was kind of leaning toward some self powered ones.

I'm thinking that if you'd come to joliet to get them you can have them... they should work with 60 watts pushing them...

if you are looking for self powered, check http://www.musiciansfriend.com they have some nice (and cheap) powered studio monitors that you could use.. probably check under home audio or recording..

Hmmm.... not sure how long it would be before I could get to Joliet. I may be home next weekend, but I'm not sure. If I payed for shipping would you be able to ship them?? I am still going to do some looking but I may take you up on this.

Thanks again

yeah, but that stuff gets pricey when you start putting studio stuff together Sad mine sound great, believe me, they really were worth the money, but I just use them to hear stuff while recording.. too nice for my stereo..

by the way, you don't really have to mail order them from Musician's Friend, Guitar Centers has the same stuff (MF owns Guitar Centers) you probably have one of them locally..

yeah, I think we could work something out shipping them to you man... hell, I may be able to head up your way and save you some coin also (they're pretty heavy)

Awesome. Like I said, I may be home next weekend (the last weekend in september) so if that is true I have no problem heading down toward Joliet it's just that right now I am in Urbana. Bit of a bike ride. LoL

At least I narrowed it down that far. LoL Any opinions on these??
