K & N air filters for R/C vehicles
#1
I had heard that you should not use K&N filters for R/C because they are not meant to filter fine particles that can harm an R/C motor. They work great for 1:1 cars that do not need such fine filtration. I don't know if anyone uses them but this is something you should consider.

Came accross this on Savagecentral.com:

"K&N does not make filters specifically for R/C applications. It is our crankcase vent filters that are most commonly used on these applications. To find a filter for your model, you will need to provide the flange style and size you need. You can find all of our crankcase filters by size at <http://www.knfilters.com/vent.htm>.

If you are looking for a complete intake kit for an R/C vehicle, you will need to go to an R/C Hobby store that makes or supplies such kits with the K&N filter on it.

Thank you,

Leon S. Collins

K&N Technical Support"

Based on this info, I would stick with the Motorsaver brand.

I've heard the same...K&N = no good for R/C

MS is the best bet w/ dry foam pre-filter for the really dusty runs

There are lots of people that won't run K&N's on their 1:1's because they let through a lot of fine dust. Other 1:1 guys won't run K&n's because the oil actually comes off the filter and coats the hot wire on the MAF meter.

Here are a couple sites I had saved where they tested a K&n Vs other filters. kinda scary results..

edit.. one interesting way I read to filter out the fine dust that K&N's miss was to buy a cloth shop vac filter and wrap that around the K&N. supposidly it catches all the fine dust.

Don't use K&N, and MS's are pushing it (unless you have an old style which is still kinda pushing it). MS filters were not designed correctly due to the fact that the front (mesh grill?) that needs to be removed before changing the foam, falls off by itself letting the foam slide out during a race.

I use Mugen. It's like $15 or something

The foam doesnt just slide out, it pretty much springs out. It happened to me 2 times with my 2.5. Also, the hollow center of the foam is unsupported, so it could possibly collapse if the engine is at a high enough RPM.

I like the MS filters, hte more open design offers a lot more airflow, EXCEPT for that reason. A simple fix for this, is to take a small piece of womans nylons, strech it over the Motorsaver filter, then put on the outer filter or zip tie the nylon in place. this keeps the cap in place and doesn't limit brethability.
