52 Deluxe Project - Gene - 03-19-2009

It's been a while since the last time I built a car so, I'm going to try to have this thing ready for the hunnert car pile up in October. So no new r/c toys this year..

Here's a car that's a bit different than whats usually on here.

So far, I'll be running the stock front end but with a disc brake conversion kit. I'm just waiting for my mastercylinder to get here The rear end will be out of an s10 on 2" wide leafs (stock is like 1.5")

For the drivetrain, I have a decent 350 w/ and an old school draw through rajay turbo. A fresh 200r4 should good.

Tires- Some g78-15 with a 3.25" white wall. (later I may go to 670-15 with a 4.5" white wall) on some black stealies.

I'll knock out the body work and paint it a metalic satin blue. I have all the stainless trim that will go back on as well as the bumpers.

So, not too much to be done with it this year, but next year I'll put a mustang II front end and a 4 link (notched frame channels) with bags. I'm a welder by trade so making strong welds ain't no biggie, but the geometry setting it up will be a nice challenge. And then I'll most likey swap out the motor for something else, like a (bmw) M50 megasquirted or whatever, just to be different.

1. this will never be nufn' but a boat anchor

2. drums on the front???

3.www g78-15, about 4.5" wide..... tread width wide, no rims yet
[Image: DSC_0019.jpg]
4. pulling it apart, I do have the hood
[Image: DSC_0008.jpg]
5. time to pull the boat anchor and weld in some new mounts for the v8

52 Deluxe Project - Gene - 03-19-2009

So far, i'm playing the waitng game for all my parts to come in. I actually spend more time sourcing out parts from my vendors that I deal with than actual wrenching..which do to my busy schedual, I get about 2 days a week to do work on it. So I think 6 1/2 months to get it ready is a good time frame.

I'm sure that I'll run into some problems, but its a fairly basic build this time around. the only problems that I know that I'll encounter is setting up the tuning on the turbo. I'll run a water injection on it (the intake manifold is set up with a normally open switch for this purpose) To keep things safe for boost

I've built a couple power added cars (nitrous fed 302, cetrifical blown 383 stroker) but never a turbo. Should be fun, but I'm not looking for big numbers or fast 1/4 times-especially on the g78-15s- just more the exotic look of the turbo.

Alright! got my motor mounts in today. They are solid mounts, which really isn't ideal, but the price was good. For the first phase of the build, it's mainly just to get it drivable (and presentable) for this years hunnert. Then over the following year, i'll go all out on the suspension and interior.

1. the solid mounts

2. for fun: here's what a rear end from the early 50s looks like. That's not drive shaft, I think it was called a torque tube rear end.

I should have the motor mounts mocked up by next weekend- I'm not able to work on the car this weekend. Then, I just have to fab up a cross member for the 200r4 trans

I was speaking with Joe at Hobbytown the other day about the turbo set up. Here's a picture that I lifted off of google of the same setup that I'm running. My turbo kit is still in the packaging (from the early 80s) I'll have it mocked up a soon as the weather gets a little warmer again.

The scene is great. Last year at the Hunnert car pile up in Morris I believe there were over 1000 cars, $5 to get in and free parking. Just in the parking lot there were a ton of cool cars as well (at least the type that doesn't meet the criteria of a rat rod)

Since most of the shows are so cheap to go to I fully embrace them now. I went to World Of Wheels last year and the cost of just parking and getting in were so crazy that I may no longer attend.

Wow, that is a different set up. I can't wait to see it on the motor you're going to use Gene!

Wow, seems like these things are gaining in popularity. Totally diffrent side of cars you don't see that much. Was never really into the rat rods but I definattly could drive this with some meats in the back.
