When your bored, hack OS X to run on a PC. :) - Thirdgen89GTA - 11-15-2008

Following some nifty directions on the net, I patched my copy of OSX Leopard to run on my PC, a 3ghz Core 2 Duo, with 4gb of ram that I built for $270.

System specs
Wolfdale C2D 3ghz
4gb cas 5 DDR2 800
ATi Radeon 4850
2x 250gb sata
2x 320gb sata

I normally dual boot Vista 64bit along with Ubuntu 64bit, recently upgraded to the new 8.10 release and thats got some DAMNED cool stuff. To give you an idea of the eye candy this is a you tube video showing off the wicked desktop effects possible.

So does that help to make it more virus proof on the net as Mac claims?

OS X and linux aren't any more virus proof than Windows is. The problem is that Windows is about 90% of the market, OS X about 8% and then the linux flavors take up the remaining.

So to the average malicous programmer whats more tempting? Writing a virus for a system thats only going to take down 8% of the market, or one that could potentially affect 90% of the market?

There are viruses for OS X and Linux too. And they can be just as succeptible to the browser hijacks on the net.

Ok, got it.
Thanks, so is it all the Mac apps that you can run that got you wanting to install OSX? or what?

NERRRRRD! Actually Leopard and all the older Mac operating systems are all Unix operating systems. Unix is known to be the safest operating system out there. Ive run Macs for a long time and believe me, there arent viruses for Macs. Ive gone to so many sites. Ones that would kill PCs. Im not trying to start anything. Just pointing out facts and my personal experiences.

And why would you want your windows to fly/spin/flap And all the other stuff.

No, the only Mac OS based on unix is OS X. OS 9.2 and below are all apple's works and not related to unix. Though applescript is a great tool for those who know how to use it.

Viruses do exist for macs, and if I wanted to I could find one, but I'm not one to go looking for them on the net. I leave the "hacking" to the script kiddies, and the cracking to the real geniuses.

And for the mis-informed OS X has PLENTY of problems. I am an IT Manager for RR Donnelley and one of the sites i'm responsible for is a pre-press site with about 150 users. Of the 150 users about 135 of them run macs of various kinds. There are plenty of issues with macs. Profile corruption, corrupt preferences, font conflicts..etc. If I were to compare the average corporate PC user to the average corporate Mac user I couldn't say which is more troublesome.

And I wouldn't count linux as an OS for anyone. Even most windows and mac power users that I know would probably avoid using it if they could. Since its open source it evolves MUCH faster than either Windows or Mac, but its also prone to dependancy issues, and conflicts between resources. Why do I run it though? Despite its issues, its FAST as hell, uses almost no resources, it'll happily run on a older P4 with a gig of ram without slowing down even when Vista and OS X start to crawl. And when you give it the proper hardware you can do some AMAZING things with it.

I run all three major operating systems, Windows, Linux, and OS X. My primary work machine is a Macbook Pro, the desktop is Ubuntu 8.10, and the server is Vista home premium hooked up to the 360 as a media extender.

I just stick to windows xp with tons of virus stuff I haven't gotten bitten in a couple years.

EDIT: that was a lie...I seem to have forgotten, I reformatted my PC a month ago because I got bitten big time...Lol

By older I meant 10.1, 10.2, and the various versions of those too.
