Windows Vista - Mr. Tune - 12-07-2006

Any here using it or plan on using MS's new OS? I got my hands on a copy and I must say, it's pretty damn nice!

I'm slowly installing my required softwares and testing them out 1 by 1 to see what works and what doesn't.

So far so good! Yahoo, iTunes and my Canon printer work great so far. Lots of new stuff all over the place too. Goodbye ugly blue XP theme and hello transparencies! The gadgets are a nice touch too. About time microsoft started listening to it's customers!

Screen shot coming shortly. Installing photoshop as I type this Smile

Windows Vista - Traxxas_Junkee - 12-07-2006

Did you download it from Microsoft's website? I don't think I'm going to download it unless they have a Media Center edition, I have it now and I like having it, I don't want to lose the ability to use the comp as TV.

Windows Vista - briyouu - 12-07-2006

tune, how did you get a copy this fast?

Windows Vista - Traxxas_Junkee - 12-07-2006

I thought I saw where you could download it on the Microsoft website but now I can't find it, maybe I just saw an advertisement for it.

Windows Vista - Mr. Tune - 12-07-2006

The Home Premium and Ultimate editions of vista will have all the media center stuff. I installed the ultimate version and the media center works great!

traxxas_junkee, I have my ways Wink.

Windows Vista - Czech-it-Out Graphics - 12-07-2006

Ha ha, some guy that works for my dad used to get all of that stuff, but then he got caught. Get a screenshot when you can, I'm curious to see how it looks.

Windows Vista - Mr. Tune - 12-07-2006

Here's a quick screen shot. Hopefully it shows off the transparency stuff a little.

Windows Vista - cemeb4dk - 12-07-2006

they all look clothed to me, no transparancies here...

Windows Vista - Mr. Tune - 12-08-2006

LOL, gotta keep the wallpapers tastefull. Smile

Windows Vista - squirrel - 12-08-2006

Thanks for reminding me tune! I'll have a copy of it tomorrow!!!! Gotta love hackers at work

Windows Vista - FreeRideFrosty - 12-08-2006

I bet you can get it off of bit torrent. I am happy with XP for now. It blows..... but I will probably get a mac anyway. Plus I can't screw it up more by not downloading that....

Windows Vista - Mr. Tune - 12-08-2006

I thought about getting a mac a few months ago. I had borrowed a G5 from a buddy for a few weeks to try it out. Unless you don't do anything other than mess around with home videos, upload photos from a camera and surf the internet, it's pretty much useless IMO. The mac's lack of 3rd party software kept me using windows equipment.

Plus, the security is leaps and bounds better on vista than xp.

Windows Vista - Traxxas_Junkee - 12-08-2006

Did you have to re-install all of your programs? And what about your files? Did it transfer everything over? I had to re-load XP on my laptop a few times and it completely erased everything.

Windows Vista - Mr. Tune - 12-08-2006

The first time I did it was via upgrade. It retained all the old programs and files and everything.

The next day, I used the disk to do a full wipe and install of the hard drive. I hate all the factory installed programs that come on new pc's, and most new pc's no longer ship with xp disks, so you're sol on getting yourself a clean install without the extra crap unless you already have a xp disk lying around.

I keep all my files on an external hard drive anyways, so reloading the OS or getting a new pc is never a big deal for me.

Windows Vista - Traxxas_Junkee - 12-08-2006

Yeah, I never had anything on the laptop, I have a wireless network set up so I just kept everything on a desktop PC. Anyone know when it is supposed to actually be released? And will it work on comps still running windows 98?

Windows Vista - Mr. Tune - 12-08-2006

It's official release to the consumer is Jan 30, 2007. It was released to high volume license users on Nov 08th.

If you have a computer still running 98, it probably won't have enough horsepower to run vista, lol.

Windows Vista - Traxxas_Junkee - 12-08-2006

I didn't think it would, its pretty slow running 98. I just looked at the C drive is 3.81 gigs with only 1.91 free and 258 MB of RAM. It was an old laptop my dad had at work (Panasonic Toughbook) that he just brought home since our other one crashed, I don't use it much, its nice for vacation and stuff like that but I hate Windows 98, I thought just maybe...

Tune, got anymore screen shots? I want to try it out but my luck I would screw it up. Is there a way to put it on a seperate parition (SP?) than what my current XP files are on?

Windows Vista - HAGASAN - 12-18-2006

Tune, Bring that disk over man so i can install it on my Ferrari notebook, it looks cool.

Windows Vista - Mr. Tune - 12-18-2006

traxxas_junkee, You can install in on a seperate partition, but to do so you'd have to whipe out your xp install since creating multiple partitions on a hard drive requites reformatting it. I've heard of software that will do it on the fly, but I've never seen or used it. I'll grab some more screen shots today.

hagasan, I'll make you a copy of the dvd. Only problem is that the trick I tried to stop the activation on it didn't work Sad. I'm still on the look out for a proven method to bypass the activation on it.

Windows Vista - Thirdgen89GTA - 12-18-2006

I'd run vista on my computer. But my current setup has the movie/music drive as a Raid 0 array and Vista does not support my Raid card.

I was able to run it breifly on a MacBook Pro at work a while ago. very cool with parallels and all.

Windows Vista - Traxxas_Junkee - 12-18-2006

I E-Mailed Gateway (my computer) and they don't have a version to work with my computer yet I guess. Like the vid card won't work that great and the sound won't work at all. Also I have about 40 gigs of movies/music on my comp so I don't really want to lose all of that yet. I'll guess I will just wait until I can get a copy that eveything will work on my computer. Thanks for the info though. Does anyone know when they will be making comps with it already installed?

Windows Vista - Thirdgen89GTA - 12-18-2006

Microsoft has pretty much dropped any support of devices older than 3 or 4 years. If you have components older than that good luck finding working drivers, its up to the original mfg to provide vista drivers then. Vista is really only meant to work on todays computers. Microsoft figures that if you have a computer that is 3yrs or older that you'll just use Xp, 2k, or 98. Which is true in a fashion. My computer is certainly fast enough to run Vista.

In fact, several of my NIC's don't work with Vista. I've got about 4 or 5 10/100 NIC's at home and none of them work with Vista. The only one I have that works is the Gbit lan card. But I don't have a Gigabit router to use that speed.

Windows Vista - Traxxas_Junkee - 12-18-2006

my computer is about 1 1/2 years old.

Windows Vista - Mr. Tune - 12-18-2006

Traxxas_Junkee Wrote:Does anyone know when they will be making comps with it already installed?

Vista release date is January 30. I'm sure all the big computer makers will sell vista with the pc on that date.

But, most are offering a free vista upgrade with a new pc purchase anyways, so no need to wait to buy a new pc if your in the market for one.
