Wireless internet help - snakebite46 - 10-07-2006

I just bought a new wireless router. Picked up a Linksys WRT54G wireless router. Set it all up, and when I connect to it, it says its an insecure network. I've been trying to figure out how to set-up it up for secure but have no idea how to do it. Anyone have the same or similar router ?????

I think if when you click on the set up network, there should be a part where you can type in a code, but I'm not sure. Then you should just be able to type in your code, and then put the code in on the PC that is on wireless so you and only you can get on.

You'll need to create a wireless key. You also need to chose the type of encryption.

Truthfully the easiest setup for most people is to leave the encryption off and just stop broadcasting the network name (SSID). That way most people won't even know its there.

Most offer WPA and WEP modes.

WPA is WiFi Protected Access, WEP is Wired Equivilent Privacy (64 and 128bit encryption) Both of these will keep everyone but the most determined from accessing your network.

I understand all that. my problem is accessing the router to change over to secure network. The D-link I had had a ip addy I typed in to change all the stuff. This one does not.

Router IP's are notoriously built on a few principles.

A consumer router IP is almost always going to start as a 192.168.x.x address.

From there, a Router will generally use the first available #.

I have seen these listed as Router IP's as the most common.

192.168.1.1
192.168.2.1

Yeah something still aint right. It works when it wants too. It'll be fine and then the wireless stops working.....plug the lan cable back in and nothing... Unhook the wireless router and it works fine. Thought maybe something was wrong with the Dlink I had. But obviously something else is the problem here. This all started when I switched over to SBC DSL.

Wireless internet help - Michowski - 10-08-2006

ditch the dsl and get some cable internet if you can. Ive been starting to hear of a lot of people having problems with dsl. Not sure what company tho.

Wireless internet help - Mr. Tune - 10-08-2006

When the wireless stops working, does the wired part stop working too?

Wireless internet help - snakebite46 - 10-08-2006

Yup. But if I take out the wireless router (disconnect it entirely) DSL works perfect.

Wireless internet help - Michowski - 10-08-2006

do you mean when its plugged into the modem itself?

Wireless internet help - snakebite46 - 10-09-2006

When the wireless router is not plugged into anything it works flawless. (as if I never had one)

Wireless internet help - Tex - 10-09-2006

then why do you have one? ............seriously?

is it just so you can take a laptop and go wherever you want throughout the house with it?

Wireless internet help - snakebite46 - 10-09-2006

yeah.

Wireless internet help - Tex - 10-09-2006

makes sense Smile

Wireless internet help - snakebite46 - 10-09-2006

Main reason is so the ol'lady can mess with while shes chillin when the little g is napping. All we have is a laptop and I like taking it out to the garage when I'm wrenching on my shit late at night...
