savage x engine replacement - dirtguy90 - 03-29-2006

well, i could get a savage x with everything but the engine for $200
so what would be a good motor that will be cheap
im looking at the wasp .28, about how fast would that motor be?
any other reccomendations that aren't too expensive?

thanks

I am not so sure about the wasp 28. People reported that it was harder to tune and not much faster that tne wasp 26. There are lots of .28s these days. One from the new LST or MGT would be nice. You can get a good used K4.6 for about 150 too.

what about the mach .28?

savage x engine replacement - Traxxas_Junkee - 03-29-2006

SH .28 is a good motor.

SH .28 is NOT a good motor. save your money there.

I say get a Picco .27 they are like $150 new and are really decent. Otherwise the Mach.28 is another good choice if it's anything like the mach.26...great budget motor that really moves, tunes well and last a long time.

Maybe look for something used? I just sold my Eb mods Novarossi P5 ($350) for $150

The mach 28 is said to be a good motor and is roto start compatable. The SH 28 has been said to have bad pull starts that break and are hard to find replacements for.

You can get the axial 28, only $150. Or used engines are good too. I sold my less than a gallon Sportwerks .26 for $31 on ebay. Sad

Gabe.... FYI, the mach 28 IS a SH .28..... they are the same thing. Its a rebage.

Balt71 has a mach .28 in his mgt and its a very strong motor runs well and and always starts. He also has a mach .26, He said he actully prefered the .26 it has better top end

what about the sts .28?

savage x engine replacement - rocco79 - 03-29-2006

Ive heard good things about it but i have NO personal experince with it....

I run a XTM 24/7 pro . Its a version of the mach .26. It has alittle more rpm and is ported slightly differnt . I absolutly love these engines. Ive dont think ive ever gotten less that 6 gallons out of one. They are realtivly cheap, very durable, holds a tune, easy too tune powerhouses.

I have a SH .28 that I used to run in a LST, and ran it in my LSP for 2 months, it is now my back up engine though.
It runs great, lots of power with 30%, but it liked to run in the 250* range.
I was using a JP-2 for top end and a 14t clutch bell (13t is stock) and it still had killer low end in the LSP. The only reason I quit running it, was it sucked the fuel down fast and glow plugs didnt last to long compaired to my P5Big Grin

P.S. Rocco's right, Mach's are made by SH Smile
BTW, stay away from the wasp 28!

yeah run the other way from the wasp motor

savage x engine replacement - dirtguy90 - 03-30-2006

how do the sts .28 an mach .26 compare to the stock savage x motor? better torque? better top end?

savage x engine replacement - Tex - 03-30-2006

yeah I don't know anything about the mach.28,. all i know is the mach.26's seemed like a really good bargain.

Sorry for the crap info. I have just seen way to many broken conrods in SH.28's for me to accept that they are good motors.

Who on here has broken a conrod in a SH.28? multiple people just on this board alone.

Concidering we dont have a savage X owner here on the board ( atleast if we do they havent said much) is hard to answer that... Im sure hpi made the .25 the "x" comes with better than the engine it replaces. Im sure a mach 26 or 28 would most likely have more power but thats just a guesstamit...

Tune and myself had conrods break in our sh.28's at less than a gallon.... But i know that hobbypeople took care of me and sent me a brand new motor... Which i sold to tune, that also blew the rod:eek: Sad Sad Sad Sad Sad ... SH ( the maker of the engine) had a bad batch of connecting rods make it into production. They went into the mach .26's that here destin for LST's and into the sh.28's. Hobbypeople ( sh engine distributer) and SH have recitfyed this problem many months ago and both engine are back on par....

To be sure your getting a "new" problem free SH engine just look on the flange where it mounts to the motor mount ... You should see a 4 to 5 number serial number with a letter in it... If you dont see one dont buy the engine. Insist on a newer serial numbered model. You will have no problems with these models, And if you do hobbypeople.net has amazing customer support! They warrentied the SH that blew for me and i didnt even buy it from them.

The Mach .26 is a bad a$$ engine too, easy to tune and held it pretty good.
IMO with 30% nitro it was just as fast as my SH.28 when I tried them both in my old LST Smile
