Not only can you hear sounds in front, left, right, and behind you. You hear sounds ABOVE and BELOW you as well. You have to listen to it using headphones though or the effect is lost. Its a freaky sounding clip even though there is nothing about the sounds themselves.

It uses a recording technique called HRTF

Quote:The head-related transfer function HRTF, also called the anatomical transfer function ATF, describes how a given sound wave input (parameterized as frequency and source location) is filtered by the diffraction and reflection properties of the head, pinna, and torso, before the sound reaches the transduction machinery of the eardrum and inner ear (see auditory system). Biologically, the source-location-specific prefiltering effects of these external structures aid in the neural determination of source location, particularly the determination of source elevation.

thats awesome
that is pretty kool
Pretty sweet!
that rocks! i wonder when they will get this to work for your home entertainment system(without head phones)
That was cool.

+1 @ Hooba
dude that was trippy as hell!
Imagine a next gen console with a headphone plug on the controller and having games give this type of sound experience. It would make those horror/suspense type games much scarier. Imagine a racing game, you are driving like mad and when you pass under an overpass you can hear the engine being reflected off the concrete or steel girders above, what the car would sound like roaring through a tunnel.

BTW, I have a sound card called an Aureal SQ2500 made 5 years ago that had this technology but hardly any games were made with it in mind so the feature was never used.
while i was listening to it i kept looking around like there was someone behind me. That was awesome.

The sound clips on this page will make you turn your head.

This hasn't been edited or anything, this is simply a stereo recording using special placement of the mics.
