yea looks like there are 3 versions of the akula class, so anything is possible

that would be cool working on a sub.

looks like you never found it huh? according to the US it was trying to track an akula in 1995 of the USA coast but never was able to track it Sad

it was very cool duty! You had to bust your ass to make it through school and qualifications but I can't complain at all, I saw some really cool stuff!

we'd tracked a couple over time, but that falls under that "we don't talk about it" stuff Big Grin

from what i have read on the sub russia used inferoir parts on the sound deadning stuff and it is supposed to be quiter then the seawolf class but the material losses its acouistic absorbing qualities over time, russia use inferior material???? never would have thought that one Smile

they also say the akula is probably the fastest sub at over 30knt underwater

the one thing about russia is everyonce in a while they make some real good stuff, like there jet fighter that has thrust vectoring on it, they have had it for quite some time, way ahead of us

example look at this plane ,its the biggest plane built and it was used to transport the bootleg version of the space shuttle that russia copied from us, only thing is this plane is so big it carries the space shuttle in its cargo bay where the US mounts one on top of i believe a 747, so that gives you an idea of how big this thing reallyis
the story was when I was in... if you were a russian sub sailor, when you completed your first deployment, you'd pretty much be sterile because of the lack of radiological controls.. they just got too much radiation, life expectancey wasn't good.. and I guess it got worse with the collapse of the USSR.

but, their technology (submarines is all I know) was some pretty good stuff, the typhoon class came out and there wasn't any intel gathered for quite some time, we couldn't find her... their propulsion systems were nice and quiet.. a lot of stuff was so quiet that it could be easily masked by biologics or surface craft.. cool stuff.. we had this of course, but it was a constant battle of submarine technology, they went as far starting to rubber coat the hulls of our boats to make it look like what it wasn't... the cold war era was very cool to play submariner in Big Grin

I'm not sure on the Akula speed, I know that we could break 30+ knots, but everyone hid what the boat could actually do.. so no one really knows, I do know that if you were on station and tracked the akula it was a nice prize.. they were hard to find and hard to track and any intel was sought after..

it's not the fastest sub.. there's one up in Kittery, ME that was the fastest US, they claim 50+ knots but beyond that it's still classified 30 yrs or so later, I'll remember her name in a few minutes and edit the thread..

oh, it was the Albacore.. very cramped, but impressive...
http://www.ussalbacore.org/

here's a pic of me...
in the pic you in the artic? (im assuming because of the landscape)

thats cool stuff, i always loved submarines for some reason, i love going tot he museum of science and industry to see the sub there, u-571...i think thats the # of the ship.

the only thing i have been on is an aircraft carrier, i dont remember what one it was but my brother was inthe marines and we went to san diego to see his graduation and since he was the top of his class they took us on a tour of both the marines and naval base (i believe the naval base is now closed) and got to go on an aircraft carrier, never did see everything that ship is too huge to see all at once.

i actually started to read up onsubs after the kursk went down, i was intrigued by the technology that they said russia had inthat sub, but some how couldnt get the sailors out only 200 or so feet from the surface, and they wouldnt let anyone help them, even thou we had the equipment that they needed to save the soldiers.

what kind of sub were you on in the pic? the pics depth perseption is a little hard to figure but it looks to be a sturgeon class sub (im basing this on the time period of the cold war and the sub looks a little smaller then a sea wolf or los angeles calss sub, but i could be wrong because it is hard to tell how far away you really are fromt eh sub in the pic)
opps its not a sturgeon class becasue of the lack of fins on con tower.

i think it is a sea wolf

look closer dude... the fairwater planes are in the 90 degree up mode for under ice ops... it was a 637 (Sturgeon) class.. I did do a tour on the 688 class boats also, and ran a patrol cycle on one of the Trident boats (just a patrol)

actually never thought about subs until I ended up in sub-indoc during school, they asked if anyone wanted to volunteer, and the guy asked me directly, my response "f**** you, that's designed to sink from the git-go!"

then I thought about it and volunteered... I ended up really liking it after the bs was done and I was qualified.

.

damn, always go with your first instink Smile i didnt see the planes and changed my mind

i was looking for a pic of the soviet grave yard of subs and found an artical on the alfa class subs and they say they do 43knt, thats freakin fast for a sub

hell yeah!!! considering the norm for us was about 3-7 knots and 20+ was for saving our butts.. I was driving once at 25knots, it handled like a corvette Big Grin

I wish! Thanks for the kind words though but it's just that I've kind of been around this hobby for a few years and learn mostly from other sites. You've got some amazing boaters in the Windy City area that do know their shit. I've found out the hard way that if you want to seriously race boats and think that you're bad, come over there and go head-to-head with the boys (and girls!) in your neck of the woods. I've had my ass handed to me a on platter over more than a few times!
I've raced at the old Silver Springs State Park pond, the old Illini Powerboaters pond off Caton Farm Road in Joliet and the forest preserve SW of O'Hare (Ida Lake).
http://www.impba4.com is the site for race info and http://www.intlwaters.com is a boat forum site that its Admin, Tom Moorehouse lives in a Chicago 'burb.
I miss racing in your area but I hate the drive as I-94 gets really insane on the weekends. We get a lot of people from Illinois that come this way then and have to head home on Sunday nights. I've come home from races and was happy that I wasn't westbound as I've seen traffic backed up for over 5 miles with people standing outside their cars!

I'll stop in here and see if I can help some of you out with boating questions. I'm mostly into nitro small-blocks, .45 and under.
Go check out an area boat race sometime if you already haven't. Grab a picnic lunch, some chairs and don't be afraid to talk to the boaters as they are generally a good bunch of people.
Cool, we needed a good exp boater here! Glad to see ya on here Ron. I remember the racin over there along I-55 in Plainfield! Me and a couple of my buds on here are gettin pretty interested in it now! I got the Mr. Pringles elec boat from a local guy that had it since new and never assembled it! Hope to get it done someday soon! I'd really like to get into nitro boats myself! Are you local to the area?

Matt Big Grin
I'm on the other side of the Big Lake, over in Kalamazoo. I found this site from another member who had posted it on another forum site. I still know a lot of people over there and I buy a lot of my parts from a guy that runs a hobby shop out of his house, Gary Preusse. If you go into the IMPBA site and look at the records, his name is all over the place.
The Illini Powerboaters quit using that site and had moved to a pond outside of Chicagoland Speedway but lost that site due to new track owners from what I've heard. The club that ran at Silver Springs lost that one due to one noise complaint or a Park Ranger with an attitude. Too bad as the host club there was one of the oldest in the US and folded up after losing the pond.
I've heard that you can find boaters running almost every weekend at Ida Lake/Lake Ida although they have a weed problem there.
I'm one of the boat Mod's over at RC Universe so if you can't find me here, go over there. I hate promoting the site that I work at because they really don't like us to talk about competing forum sites unless there is a direct link to a thread that answers a question and even though being a Mod, I don't like to advertise it that much outside that site.

There are/were a few Miss Pringles kits around at one time. I remember an electric version from (I think) MRP about 8 or so years ago and some 1/8 scale nitro hydros. The electric version is probably a collectable by now.
Thanks Ron, i'll be talkin to ya sometime soon i'm sure!
Thanks!

To give you all an idea of what I've got, here are some of my fleet: http://www.rcflix.com/photopost/showgall...&ppuser=15 . Some are just shots of friends and stuff but there are a few videos to boot.
My main thing right now is taking R/C truck engines and mounting them in small hulls to see how fast I can get them to go. It started off as having a bunch of nitro truck parts laying around after I got into boats so I thought that I'd see what I could do with those pieces. You'll see some of my larger boats in there also.
that's cool... tiny boat... big engine..

TONS OF FUN :joy:
I just picked up a Blast this weekend to play around with. I also have a nitro cat, I'm not sure the specs or brand
This is an old thread but if any of you want to see some serious RC boat racing this weekend, roll on down to Hobart, IN to Lake George that's right in the middle of town. Starting Friday morning we've got some of the best racers in the US, Canada and even one racer coming in from France. Yeah, I'll be there also. Somebody had to be an also-ran! Big Grin
This is going to be one of the biggest shows that you'll ever see in the midwest. It's also going to be webcast all over the world through Me Time Productions.
I went last year as a spectator and had a blast, this is one fantastic little city. I don't know who was happier to be there, the racers or the people of Hobart as we've never felt so welcome anywhere.

Cool Thanks Ron!
4wheelinrevo Wrote:yes he does, also misshydro too

Misshydro? I missed that one! I'm personal friends with her and her husband but she's learning a lot herself. We taught her not to buy cheap eBay garbage
As far as more knowledgable sites, Jim's RC Boat Dock is the best around for gas boaters, Int'l Waters; http://www.intwaters.com is the best for nitro then there's Rum Runner Racing for the watt eaters. IW is also based in the Windy City area although its members are from all over the world.
Hey guys anyone running boats in the Chicago Land Area?
If you want to find boaters in the Chicago area, there's a bunch of them on Intlwaters Community Forum . You can also find clubs on Welcome to the official website of the IMPBA then go to District 4. Check with Cindy at Al's Hobby Shop in Elmhurst as she usually knows what's going on for boat racing and sites around the Windy City area. They also carry a lot of boats and accessories.
Ron thanks... Do you run any boats?
Oh yeah, I run boats!
Sorry for the delay in responding but I've got a small fleet in my basement. A little more than half are nitro but now getting into the gas burners.
Here's a video of one of my newest that we ran Sunday letting my son take it out for a spin: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZeBHEvY7Go]YouTube - ‪Rampage mono‬‏
I'm bringing this thread back to life. September 9-11 is the race in Hobart, IN again. If you're in the area and want to see some if not the best RC boat racing in the midwest, roll on down. It's right in the middle of the city behind the police station, library, etc. Take Truck Route 51 in and you'll run right into the park. I'm only spectating this year so I'm rolling down for Friday's racing. It's also being webcast on Home live all weekend.
Hey, how's it going? I haven't been on in here in a while but not until last night's spamfest. My hat is off to the Moderation team as they had their work cut out for them!
I've been adding video's to my You Tube page of some action from Hobart about a month ago plus a lot of messing around at the local watering holes.
Here's my complete video collection: http://www.youtube.com/user/Floatsfast?feature=mhee .
