Im looking into getting a laptop for college, ive only had desktops in the past, what do you guys recommend
Anything but a Dell. My grandmas Dell laptop is shi@#, my dads desktop Dell is sh#$. I would look into Gateways, Compaq/HP if you don't want a whole lot of performance. (meaning gaming and video editing, etc.)

My sister just got a Dell for her internship that she is starting this summer. LOL
compaq's blow. my moms broke within the first week
I had a compaq that lasted 4.5 years, then the HDD went out. I could have just gotten a new HDD and it would have been fine.
ive had 3 dell desktops and loved all of them lol
dells blow up seriously i heard it on the news
Alienware!!!!!!!!
those are nice!
My mom at work has no problems with their dells. Gateways caused them problems. I think its just a crap shoot when it comes to that just like picking out a new car.

Alienware is one that I am currently looking at for a laptop. But they are not cheap. But they are set up more for those who are heavy into gaming, music, videos and so on.
I think it is pretty much hit or miss. You might get a bad batch of computers and then a good batch.

I have had this Gateway for 3 years and have only had to restore it once, the Dell has had to be resored countless times, and crashed once. (Had to have a tech come and charge us $400 to fix the stupid thing) it still locks up all the time, slow (takes literally about 12 minutes to unlock after plugging an I-Pod into it) etc.

I know I will never buy a Dell myself. Both Gateways I have had have been great. My mom just got an Acer laptop, seems to be pretty nice, not the most powerful thing in the world but it gets the job done.
Dell, Compaq... its like the difference between ford or chevy. All the people that have problems with these thing never tell you the real story. Like I dropped it, spilled pop on it, deleted a dll file. Alienware is nice but if you want a rockin machine your gonna pay for it. Other then that their just like the rest, just overpriced. I personally would buy a lesser known machine like Acer or something, just due to never hearing about bad things and their pretty cheap for the same exact machine that HP or Compaq would offer. Check out Newegg.com or Tigerdirect.com. They sell some pretty cheap (affordable) machines. And theres 2 tigerdirect stores in illinios that you could just go and pick up without having to pay for shipping, though there is tax, unlike Newegg. Just remeber EVERYTHING is made with the same parts. For example: an alienware will have the same processor, memory, hard drive as everyone else, the case just has a different name on it. Now before the disagreements start about everything having the same stuff, Do you really thing alienware has there own manufacturing plant(for hard parts not computer building)? Or anyone else for that matter? Its not cost effective, everything comes from china or similar, and just has a different sticker put on it. Also check Cnet for reveiws. Do your homework any you wont be left in the cold.
Had both an HP and a Dell at the same time. HP was for work and the Dell was for home. Never really had a problem with either of them. Dell was a little bit slower booting up, but thats about it.
ya ive been looking at the dell XPS seems like a pretty capable machine, we have dell notebooks at school also and they seem to hold up just fine. Alot of people have been telling me to go the imac route. never really been a fan of apple's but if they are better then its something id consider
if you got the cashola get an alienware. exellent for anything you put it up to
we've got 2 dells and both are fine. not any problems
dell xps's are the shit
Alienware is the shit

Heres food for thought, "you get what you pay for!" A $500 laptop will never compare to a $2000 laptop!
i understand that, i am not even considering cheap sh!t as i know it will be of no use to me unless all i use it for is as an expensive type writer lol
I have a dell xps 400............I can multi-task hardcore with zero lag/delay.............that says something............XPS's are good machine

Alienware= waaaaaaaaaaay overpriced
sounds like its gonna come down to xps vs the alienware alientis or some shti like that
my sister got an hp laptop a couple months ago and its an amazing machine compared to my old toshiba laptop. my next laptop is probably going to be an hp
I've had a DELL XPS Laptop for 2 years. The only problem I had, is I have the first gen system. The heatinks and fans clogged and fried my CPU and Video Card. I clean it out once a week and since then no problems. Very Capable Notebook. For a nice price too.
Any laptop that has big specs and screens (like the alienware and dell xps) is gonna weigh a ton. May feel fine at first, but you'll see what I'm talking about after carrying on your shoulder and walking around school with it all day. You might wanna look into a slimmer, lighter laptop. Your shoulder will thank you.
The new Viao's are lite and thin. They come with a hefty pricetag.
HP seems to make a decent laptop. Dell customer service alone is shit. But, if ya got the money, Alienware is good stuff.
