so my parents realized that we're going to need a 3rd car this summer if there are 4 of us that can drive and are working all at different places. (sister is at college so she will be home then) so they've been looking at a car, and I really want to go to a college that offers a good automotive program, (any suggestions? Kettering is what im looking at). But they wanna get another car for me and my sister to split, (we currently have a 2002 Chrysler Town and Country, and my dad has a 2002 Volvo S80 T6). But i asked if I would be able to work on this car if we got it and of course my dad and sister yelled at me saying i would "mess" up the car, instead of fixing it. My mom sees my side of thinking that if i want to major in automotives somewhere i should have some more car experience than working on my friends 65 Ford Fairlane with him. So i asked if they would let me buy a car for myself to work on, and they asked the insurance guru's and they found out that if I'm insured on a mid 90's vehicle instead of the 2 newer more expensive cars then their insurance would overall go down. They also said they would split the bill with me because that was waht both my parents parents did for them on their first car.

SO, i'm looking to get basically a "junker" that runs, or just needs a few things to run, doesnt need to be in the best condition, but something that i could get working and be able to say it is mine. So one who has a few junkers forybody know someone who has a few junkers, for lack of a better word, that they're selling? I'm thinking Honda, Toyota, Mistubishi, something that there would be parts for, because the insurance they would put me on would only cover the damage to the other car, so that i could pay and fix it if i broke my car. So im looking for something that there is a bunch of parts for, (ideally i want a camaro but that aint gonna happen unless i get to know some people...) and would be pretty good on gas too. It can have rust, it can have a shitty paintjob, it can have a bad interior, preferrably a working drivetrain, manual or automatic, but i figure if i get a manual then others in my family wont wanna drive it. and i was thinking a 4 banger just because theyre good on gas but could be some fun. I'm looking at like $2,000 tops, preferrably less since it doesnt have to be in great condition. Any Ideas? or anyone know anyone that could help me?
Although I share your idea on buying a "junker" and fixing it up, I cannot stress the fact that you should get a car with a warranty!! I went to school and majored in auto/diesel tech(U.T.I.). The last thing I wanted to do when I got home was touch another vehicle! I love working on cars, high performance that is. Day to day maintenence on a car drives me crazy! So changing a serpentine belt on my own vehicle blows, or doing an oil change. That and you really need to think about reliability, if this is going to be yours and your sisters daily driver you need it to work every day. Missing school or work reflects on you, and I'm positive your sister doesn't want to miss work because your project doesn't feel like starting that day! Then again this is only my opinion.
sorry forgot to mention that they still wanna get a car that is functional at all times to have, and i would have this as a 4th car just to work on. i see what youre saying though. im not looking for a TOTAL POS
IMO dont waste your time at a 4 year college for automotive. I too like squirrel went to UTI for auto /diesel. I would recomend going there. As long as you pay attention and honestly want to learn it the best place to go.Its cheaper than a 4 year college(or at least it was when i went back in 2000) and your in and out in about a year and a half to two years. All my friends went to four year university and almost all of them are not doing what they went there for, so why waste the money. College isnt for everyone. Plus by the time your done youll have almost 3 years head start in the real world. As far as the car goes trust me from experiance, get something reliable while in school. You wont have enough time to work on your stuff anyways while in school.Plus what good is it going to do learning to work on a car when the car might not be able to make it to class for you to learn. I had the same issue when i was going to school driving my truck. I finally got to the point that i wasnt sure if it was going to get me to school and home again. There nothing more stressfull than wondering iff youll be able to make it home after school.Get something with proven reliability like a toyota or honda. It might not be as "cool" as a camaro but how "cool" will you be when your stuck on the side of the road somewhere when your unreliable project car breaks down.Plus you can pick them up cheap and they will run forever.
yea i'm looking at getting something just to have. not necessarily for college. i'm only a junior so i have some time.
my parents really want me to go to a 4 year college so i have a degree incase automotives doesnt work as a full time thing for me.

Does anyone know of someone selling a mid 90's civic? or anything honda?
2grand.... That is the budget I am looking at for a college car. Looking at Turboing a Civic, Turbo or Spray a Mustang GT, DSM AWD (Talon or Eclipse).
you also have a 2 grand budget? mine is more of an I have to pay half, and I want something that needs some work so I'm looking on the cheaper end. I really want a mid 90's Honda, because our insurance would go down overall, so my parents would be foolish not to insure me on it.
Yeah.... I am staying cheap because I need to make enough this summer to buy the car, insurance for they year, and pay for the parking spot in case I don't work during the school year. The thing is that I want a pretty quick car too....

yea, its hard but definately do-able. I'm looking at finding a CRX, Civic, Del Sol (all from any 90's), or possibly a Toyota MR2 from like early 90's.

I was hoping that someone knew a buddy or someone that could help me out, or might have a car that theyre selling. But so far no one mentioned it.
