Full Version: Possible to charge a Gel Cell with NiMH peak charger?

I'm sitting here staring at the slow 12 trickle charger in the wall charging my bumpbox.

Now, I know that the peak charger I have can do NiCad, and NiMH. But its not capable of charging lipo. So there is the possibility of it not being able to charge the gel cell as well.

Does anyone know if its possible to charge it? I suppose if I get really desperate I can always get the full size car battery charger out, that will charge it reliably over night and automatically go into a mode where it just maintains the battery keeping it topped off.
I think your charger has to have a setting for charging 1 cell at a time.... I THINK....
Just let the wall charger run overnight, use it if you need to the next day, and then plug it back in at the end of the night. One nights charge on it will be plenty to last a day or two(as long as you're not trying to break in a new motor or something), just plug it in every night until you think it's sufficently charged.
PM ATA Thrash...He uses his Nimh to charge his gell cell
My MRC super brain 959 charges my gel cel Smile
My starter box will usually go for at least two weekends without charging it.
Last time I raced it was getting slugish (third weekend) so I had to charge it at the track and in 15min it was good to go for the rest of the day starting two vehicles Smile

But I normally charge it with my 1:1 car charger on the 2amp trickle overnight.
Gel cells need to be charged at a very low amperage the wall chargers are usually .6 amp for 14 hours if the battery is discharged. I use my pirana to charge mine at .5 amp and a peak of about 10 mv. U can use 1 amp in a pinch, but u will get a better charge at .5 amp. U can use Ni or Mh settings

Cool, I will have to try that.
What do you set the Mah? For when charging it with the piranha. I assume just set it high and let it peak when it peaks?
Mabye it says on the cell? Just a thought, idk.
Nope, the battery doesnt' say if its compatible with NiMH, or NiCD chargers. Nor does my charger state it can, or cannot charge gel cells. though the instructions specifically say it can't charge LiPo (not that I didn't know it couldn't already).
