I wonder how they do that? My guess is that the bottle is filled about 3/4th the way up with water and then they just drop some small slits of dry ice in it. Not sure tho but im definatly gonna try that asap. I can get dry ice free from work so im definatly gonna be doing that.
Check this one out

You wouldn't need to go 3/4 with water. Maybe 1/4 water. As the water "thaws" the dry ice, the gasses expand. If you do this, slightly squeeze the bottle as you cap it, so it gives you a couple extra seconds. Also, MOST IMPORTANTLY, Use tongs when handling the dry ice.
mich less water= bigger boom!
Be careful.... Plastic shrapnel im sure would hurt
You'll be missin some fingers come tomorrow there MichConfusedlap: j/k hehe

A quote from another site.

DRY ICE "FIRECRACKERS"
Small pieces of Dry Ice placed in an empty one liter plastic soda bottle and then filled ¼ to ½ with hot water may explode 2 to 120 seconds after the top is tightly screwed on. It also may crack anywhere and just fizzle. Wear gloves and eye protection because the resulting explosion may dangerously push out pieces of the plastic bottle or the bottle top. A woman in Houston standing too close lost her eye from the ejected bottle top, so make sure no one is holding the bottle nor anyone is near it when it explodes. Although the explosion sprays mostly carbon dioxide gas and water, many municipalities classify them with more dangerous firecrackers and outlaw them. Southern Utah's "Spectrum", reports: "It's a felony to drop a dry-ice bomb in Utah." Sometimes these dry ice bombs are called "terrorist devices" and people using them are arrested. In our area several teenagers were jailed for three days for setting off these Dry Ice firecrackers. The logical defense explains there is no chemical reaction - only a change in the state of matter - from a solid to a gas. Unfortunately there may be a high cost in lawyers fees to persuade a DA or judge of this fact. Therefore DO NOT DO THIS IF IT IS ILLEGAL IN YOUR COMMUNITY! For safety DO NOT EVER ALLOW CHILDREN TO DO THIS. Always supervise children around Dry Ice. Of course using anything other than plastic bottles is even more dangerous and by no means should ever be permitted!

As Luke Writes August 11, 2004: "To everyone who thinks those dry ice firecrackers or what we call Dry Ice Bombs are fun, think again. Me and two other friends got arrested for doing it so look at your city's laws before doing it. I did not get the idea from this website if you are wondering."
Okay, that looks dangerous. I would not encourage anyone to imitate this, except me. I am totally going to try this. That was one of the funniest things I have ever seen! I will be the coolest dad on the block! (except for all my neighbors who will hate and fear me for ever).
Same kinds of fun can be had with a plastic bottle, some aluminum foil, and a little liquid drano (or muratic acid if your impatient).

Now THAT, I would not try.
I saw concession workers on Navy Pier making these dry ice bottlebombs. They were dropping them over the side of the pier into the water!!

Care to elaborate...I think I have some muratic acid in the garage...
why not just mix up some thermite and see if you can get it to work?
Not sure where the tin foil comes into play.
the metal on the foil reacts with the drano causing alot of gas to build up really fact and boom

mich let us know where u fingers land
WOW. I tried it tonight at work with the little 20oz bottles and they sucked. I could only get 1 to actually explode. The others just busted open and just shot like rockets. Even when I dropped the ice in there it didnt really have a lot of pressure it was releasing. Screwed the cap on, shooked it really hard for 2 seconds and through it. Did nothing for about 5 minutes before I went over and just flung it straight in the air. Even at that only 1 exploded.

Well I saw they had 2 liter pop on sale so I decided to buy a 2 liter and give that a shot. Slammed the 2 liter down, filled it about 3/4th the way with water, dropped about a hand full of peices of dry ice in it. Instantly this thing was just gushing out smoke and bubbling like crazy. If you sat the cap on there it would just fling it off. I screwed the cap down tight and rolled it away from me. Didnt do anything for about a minute and then all the sudden BOOM. This thing was as loud if not louder then a shot gun going off. The bottle was mangled into 3 peices and the whole thing went flying about 8 feet in the air. It was so loud that a cop about a half a mile down the road came driving through by all the stores in the outlet. He was there in about a minute after it went off. I kid you not this thing was as loud if not louder then a gun going off. Il have to do the next one on video and show you guys. And luckily I still have all my body parts.
lol, didn't you listen? Less water=BIGGER boom! You dimmed down the effect!

Do it again and get it on video like you said, that'd be cool. We should have a berwyn bash and just do crap like that...
I tried it with less water and it didnt do anything. The more water I put in the faster the pressure built. In the video they had a lot of water in there bottles as well.
The UnCola Bomber......
after watching the video again, all they used were 2 liter bottles. Mine was probly the same as those for loudness. Theres went off within 5 seconds tho, mine took a good 30 seconds.
Keep in mind the outside temp. The dry ice will melt a little slower. Try using warm to hot water in the bottle. That should cause a faster reaction.

Hell, just for safety, I'd stick with room temp water. That way it doesn't explode in your hand.
