I am working on a trade with someone from Ultimaterc.com.
I am trading my Dirt Demon for two Stampedes (I know, but no one else wants it and I have a buyer for one of the Pedes)

Problem is how to conduct a trade with a total stranger? I have taken the hard line stance and proclaimed "you ship first". I dont know if that will happen, but its ironic that people will send money orders first but not the vehicle in a trade?

Anyway, is there a safe way to make a trade online? I just don't want to loose my rig for nothing, and thers is NO WAY I will be sending my truck off into the wild without a sure way to get my goods.

I have heard of people agreeing to ship the same day and provide tracking #s for assurance and still getting ripped when the other dude lies!

Suggestions?
call the dude and talk on the phone for a while. A simple phone call can help determine what kind of person he is by the tone of his voice and attitude. I would agree on a way to have them shipped over the phone.
You can also ask for like a down payment, say $150-$200 for that thing, and then when you get money you ship, then when they get your stuff, they ship. Then when you get theirs, you send back the money.

Always call if it's not just someone local, like Michowski said. It's very reassuring.
the way id do it is, say both ship at the same time, and both provide tracking numbers... if he dont cancel the shipment or stop shipment before it get to him.
Heres the tracking number for the two Pedes I sent ya...
761425983362.....it won't show on FedEx until tomorrow because it takes a day to show up.

Now send me the dirt demon........MUHAHAHA

My sentiments exactly.
He has agreed to ship first. We shall see.

Can you tell how much I hate trades?
A tracking number doesn't mean you won't get less than you agreed to. It just means he shipped a box.

You should insist on talking with someone else who did a long distance deal with him, if possible.

The last resort is to use an escrow service, or just have him make you a private eBay deal so you have protection through eBay. Sure you'll pay a couple bucks in fees, but make the sales price on eBay ficticiously low, so the fees are low. Then use paypal to transfer the fees and you will have buyer protection. I buy yours, then you buy mine. Net Zero $$$ transaction!

Wait, how is this done? You can have a private party sale on ebay?
Sort of, yes. He can setup an auction with a reserve and a buy it now price right where you agree to it. Then as soon as he lists it, you buy it. You just have to coordinate it so nobody comes in and buys it first....slim chance of that, but if it does happen, the seller can void the deal easily.

Sellers can also require that buyers be pre-registered before bidding. It's usually done on big ticket items like cars and real estate (yes, real estate on eBay). With no body else registered to bid except you, BINGO.
that seems hard but......PITA
You want comfort level? It's worth a little time and effort to avoid a screwy deal.
