Just saw on savage central hpi is going to release a new s.s. kit with almost every popular aftermarket hop up!!!!! Since im at the fire house i cant paste any of the pics they have at savage-central.com but if you go there just search savage 4.6 and feast your eyes on this baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
New from HPI Racing is a high performance update to unassembled Savage SS monster truck, the Savage SS 4.6!

The heart of the Savage SS 4.6 is a completely new 4.6cc (.28 cubic inch) engine that pumps out 2.9 horsepower for a top speed of 44 mph and enough power to do wheelies on command! The powerful K4.6 engine has an anodized billet aluminum head to keep it cool even during extreme off-road driving, true ABC construction using a long-life chromed sleeve, an all-new 8.5mm composite carburetor for high performance and improved high temperature tuning, and a pullstarter for easy starting. The addition of our dual chamber polished aluminum tuned pipe provides a wide powerband and higher top speed, optimized with revised 47/17 gearing. And, a new dual stage air filter with increased filtering capacity is included to help protect and extend the life of the K4.6 powerplant.

To handle the extreme power we’ve added heavy duty parts as standard equipment. Front and rear “4 gear” differentials with updated gears are included for added durability. The entire drivetrain is now equipped with heavy duty diff shafts and cup joints for strength and extended service intervals. High grip Dirt Bonz tires put the power to the ground, and they’re nearly 40% lighter than our standard Savage tires for quicker acceleration. To beef up the braking our dual disc brake kit is standard, featuring two vented stainless steel disc brakes and a machined steel brake hub. Even the steering has been upgraded to an accurate cam-type servo saver, delivering quick steering response and added servo protection.

Since the Savage SS 4.6 is an evolution of the original Savage SS, it includes the features that made the SS so popular. It’s in kit form, not preassembled, so experienced R/C modelers can have the pleasure and satisfaction of building it themselves. Kits also allows owners to build the kit to their exact specifications and customize the truck by adding any option parts such as our Reverse Module, anodized TVP and roll bar sets and Roto Start System during assembly. Since many drivers already have advanced radio systems that are perfect for the Savage SS 4.6, we don't include a radio, which helps lower the price so that we can add high performance hop-up parts and still keep the cost of the truck low. Simply put, kits are fun, convenient and price-conscious!

ABC Construction

To bad they are not including the 3-speed tranny with it.

I'll still have to pick one of these bad boys up when they become available.
I dont like the 3 needle carb.... Just an opinon. My o.g. 21bb in my savage had 3 needles and the "mid" needle was taboo so i never screwed with it . Whats the advantage to the x-tra needle????? :confused:
I'm just glad to see that HPI listens to its customers.... This edition of the truck looks to be the best ever.... The 3 needle carb is supposed to afford you a "more exact" tune according to the "experts"..... but I'm weary of it too....

I dont care for the new tires and wheels, but I can always throw my Q6 with stock tires on it. Big Grin
The tires are good... Probaly need trinity foams... Its the wheels i dont like. I dont know why they came out with all these new flashy wheels but decided to make them outta the same material that the Original savage wheels are made of... Its just not durable thats why they came up with the q6 wheel :confused:
I've only had my savage for a few months but the wheels show no signs of wear and all I've done is hard core bashing with it, alot of air. But I don't like the real soft ruber on the wheels and the inserts are waaaay too soft. I'll probably get a set of those bones tires and the q6 wheels with some third party inserts.

All the new stuff on the SS 4.6 looks great.

The cam servo saver should be awsome I run the OFNA one and it has changed my sloppy, inprecise steering to something that allows my servo to turn the wheels on the ground while the truck is stopped! (the servo saver that came with the truck was garbage should be the first upgrade for every savage it makes the truck sooooo much nicer to drive)

The dual chamber pipe is a welcome change since the ribbed one I got with the SS 25 is loud and that is about it.

The stainless dual brakes are a nice touch and allegedly they changed design slightly of the "servo saver" for the throtle and brake so it works a bit better.

And I can't forget the 4 gear diffs since that is recommended by just about everyone after they take apart thier diffs and see the carnage that even the stock 25 engine wrecks on the cups.

The nicest thing of course is that almost all the upgrades (haven't seen the part num for the engine yet) for the SS 4.6 are available now or soon will be and are all direct replacements for the current trucks. I'll probably phase in all the major changes they made into my truck as things break/wear out...

And as a fairly new guy to the RC hobby it sets my heart at ease that HPI is standing behind the Savage and it seems they feel that the design will take them through at least 2005 with fairly minor changes. As a guy with a wife and kids I don't have heaps of money to throw at this hobby and seeing the HPI commitment to this product makes me feel a whole lot better about the $500+ that I'v spent so far on the truck. Just my 2 cents.

I have had two sets of the stock tires. The first set was worn where the tire is glued to the rim. The second set got mangled when my truck was hit by a car, thats when I went to the Q6/Stock tire setup. I also tried the 7" UFO tires and rims from HotBodies, didnt care for them.

I havent changed the servo saver, my steering setup is all stock except for the Hitec steering servo I put in.

I have only ever used the stock pipe and the ribbed pipe, I currently have a black ribbed pipe on my truck right now, I like it.

This has been my #1 issue with the truck since the day I bought it. The stock setup faded really fast and I had almost no brakes after the first day of running the truck. I have gone through 4 or 5 sets of the dual brake setup and every time I end up ripping the pads off of the caliper pieces. I have done a custom brake setup on my truck using the stock carbon disk and multiple plates to get the truck to stop the way I want it to.

Havent done this yet either. I do have a second set of diff's that I plan to modify with the HPI 4 spider kit, but I have had pretty good luck with my stock 2 gear setup.

Wait till you upgrade motors your hexes will turn those wheels into swiss cheese

Call me crazy, but why is this thread the "Savage .28" thread, when it only discusses the Savage .46???? Smile
chris it is not savage .46, but a savage 4.6, .28 engine a .46 engine is 7.2 or something like that the truckzilla engine,just a bit curious i had savages over 2 yrs never ripped up wheels hubs or hexes or even the wheels themselves,how would you guys tear yours up?i have various engines from wasps to trinity .27 to a couple zilla .46's and the most i ever ripped up was clutches,i still have the original tires and wheels from them ,so i just can not see wheel hubs spin out unless they where not real secure, enlighten me on this please,

My mistake... I just saw the 46, and didn't pay attention to the placement of the . Looks like HPI is doing the same advertising gimmick Traxxas used by making a .15 a 2.5 (I know one is cubic centimeteres, and one is cubic inches) Smile
Anything to keep up with the"biggers better" way of thinking in R/C i guess
