I am very interested in buyin a nitro truck, I'm not sure which one to buy. I want it to be durable and somewhat fast. I'm looking for something low maintenance and easy to upgrade. been looking at the savage, anything else compare?
Welcome,

I assume you want Nitro Monster truck.

So either the Savage or the Revo would be a good choice. There are alot more Revo owners on here than Savage owners. Do you plan on racing or just bashing around the house and things.

Neither are going to be low maintenance, This is not a hobby where you turn it on and run it and forget about it. Most end up catching the hop up bug and end up with way more money in spares and hop ups than the original cost of the truck.

Your local hobby shops should have an adequate supply of revo and savage parts in stock. I myself have never owned a Traxxas product, and never will but that is just me. I used to have a savage I had the original 21, and it was one tough truck and it took everything I sent it ways with very minimal damage. So I would steer towards the Savage, unless you plan on racing then I would go Revo.

This topic will generate many opinions as it always do, the best it just choose one, you wont be disappointed with neither.

Good luck in your decision
savage, won't break(at all) unless you jump on concrete. buy the .
25
Racing or bashing get a Mayhem ST.
To help you out appropriately, I think it's best to ask few questions first.

What's your budget?
What's your intent? Racing? Bashing?
even though i dont really like HPI i would have to agree with the others, bashing go with the savage, racing revo all the way, also if u dont want to spend a whole lot epesically if it is your first nitro MT u might even want to look in to the maxx series, tmaxx, smaxx or sport maxx.
Ebay all the way! Used are usally good and go for cheap. I saw a like new revo with 40 series rims and a super cool custom body go for $285 just a couple of minutes ago.

there is a huge scam on ebay right now with RC's. I wouldn't buy anything RC related on ebay for the next few weeks.
I would shy away from anything used on ebay especially motors, used buggies and trucks are never as good as they sound, because everyone knows raced only twice means raced twice a week for 3 months lol
I bought a bad ass revo on ebay last week all hoped up. I find great deals on ebay, you just need to know how to look and know the sellers, ask a ton of questions and make sure you use paypal. Then you should be good on ebay
there are some gems out on ebay i will admit, but most buggies I have seen on there arent in great shape lol
As a first time buyer, I'd recommend buying something new. This way you'll get a chance to learn the truck more than buying someone elses used worn out truck.
Savage, Monster GT and Revo are good choices to look at.
yep buy new to start off with. All of the trucks mentioned above would be great choices. I would personally buy a revo, it's good for bashing and racing.

Another qualifying question for you:

How mechanically inclined are you and how much time/energy do you want to invest in the truck and tools? Some trucks are easier to work on than others.

Snake, my experience with new vs used: We bought our first RS4 used. It needed some work, but having to learn how to work on it and maintain it got me more involved with it. I think if I had purchased a new RTR I might have fallen into the mindset that you can just play with it and then put it away. Buying something used let me get inti the hobby for a little less money (risk) and see if I liked it. Then we moved up to new purchases and used purchases with more comfort level about what we would need to do to run and maintain them.

If a newcomer is coming from Tyco/Nikko toys, they might never imagine the level of work involved with a hobby RC versus a toy car. If they have a used RC that they can work on, they will either get a true feel for the nature of RC maintenance and like it, or hate the repairs and drop it.

My .02.
i agree wth dave, i bought a new rtr 4 my first vehicle and i had no clue what to do, i could drive fine but as soon as something broke i would look at it and say 4 get it and take it to the hobby shop and have them work on it. maybe buying something that needs a little work wouldnt be that bad of an idea.
yeah but when you buy used sometimes you are buying other peoples one of mods or possibly hack jobs.

For instance if I was to sell my revo I would have to explain every one off mod I did to it. It's not a hack job by any means (looks factory) but tons of modding was done that you cannot buy direct fit parts. You would have to buy the parts, then mod them to fit.
Agree. Used and user modified are two different scenarios. Knowing what you are getting into when buying "used" requires lots of question asking on the part of the buyer.

BUYERS BEWARE: DON"T BUY TEX'S REVO Big Grin
Lots of folks get into nitro not knowing that knowing how to tune them is a big part of it, also. It's like miniature NASCAR all the wrenching you do to keep one going right, especially those racers!
IDK, I would think starting with something less complicated would be the way to go for a first timer. I would recommend the Team Associated RC10GT, it's not a monster truck, it's a Stadium truck. Easy to work on and maintain, great for bashing and racing, extremely durable. Priced very well new in RTR at $285.00 or so, parts are easy to find, tons of hop-ups and it's fast. It's an aging design but it still wins the big races.
Funny how we are all rattling on and on about what we think and ironvinnie has yet to respond to any questions we asked that would help narrow down what he's looking for..... but he did say in post #1 he was considering a Savage, so MT was the direction we went.
i was thinking the same thing ^^^
I dunno...the GT would not be much different besides cost and working on it.
Besides working on them is half the fun.

He wanted a MT...I too would lean towards a Savage.
Especially being a newbie and learning to drive---this is where the durability will pay for itself.

I had my Neighbor get one and he is really happy with it and amazed at the beating he gave it so far.

Just my 2 cents
