Here is a good question for the Mods here.

If Chitown is being promoted and a friendly \ family place to chat.

Then why allow some of the racy avitars?
Avitars in womens bras -- un-HOOKING them and such is not a family thing for kids
and younger generations to be viewing here IMO.

I understand it is on the TV with commercials.

I base this on what is stated as here being a family place and to watch the foul language and arguing.
It all falls in the same catagory right?

Sorry if I am stepping on toes or upset anyone here by this but it is my obsevation that I am expressing here.

Brian
Bio, I kinda agree with you, it's borderline, but kids on computers these days can type in (i.e. www.any porno thing you want to typehere.com) if they want and see it all. It's a parental control thing. My company rules for inappropriate computer usage state that nuidity constitutes the point where it shouldn't be at work. This forum isn't a workplace, and the Avatars are generally (my .02) innocent. While some are very provocative pix (Slim) they don't show anything indecent or lewd.
Well if you think it is bordeline then IMO would be to not allow it.
I see it as if it is okay now and as the board grows it will become an issue.
So why not prevent it from being an issue.
It is best to not allow borderline topics, graphics, sexual content and whatever may apply.
At the same time make it known in the TOS when we sign on for new accounts.

Yeah kids can type that stuff in but if we all take an approach that way then we are not doing our job as parents to make more attempts to keep it from them. So why should we give them more places to find crap like that also.
This place is RC related right.
So if it is RC related then what are women avitar pics have to do with RC stuff.
Same would go for the username as well I would think.

Really IMO---I do find it offensive especially when it comes to a place that claims it is a family place.
With that in mind---it should not be here.
I find it shows what kind of person you may be---sorry it is a bit of stereotyping but we all do that.
I have my daughter who is getting into this hobby and doing more on-line things daily.
Because of stuff like this I would not want her to show up here.
It is tastless for this kind of forum.

I express this because of my own experience with being a Moderator and a lurking one on another.
When the forum grows things really get out of control and ppl get bent over the changes.
Some I agree with and others I do not.

Agian I apologize if I upset anybody by this.
edit: Bio, sorry. After looking at your first post again I realized you asked this to the Mods. I never should have posted. To late to take it back. I will stay out of it from here.

Bio, my opinion is just that, only my opinion. I am not a Mod here.
Each of us has to make choices about what is right for ourselves.
If this RC site is too open or too risque for your family values, then you have to decide if it is worth the information you can get from it. You as a visitor decide if this is a site you wish to visit. It is not broadcast into your home like WGN. If it is not what you are seeking, you will decide if it is a site you care to continue to frequent. If the owners and moderators agree, there would be changes made. I guess we'll see which way this subject goes.
PS: I am not really trying to argue, so if anything I type "sounds" arguementative, it's not meant to be that harsh.
No I hear you and I understand. A discussion on this does not hurt. It is informative really.

I am not looking to argue also.
I too am expressing my thoughts on this just as you are.
I also know you are not a Mod here as I see from the left side panel.
LOL on the edit comment...but it got your attention didn't it!

I dunno with me being new to the boards I figured I would ask away all sorts of stuff and I do feel like I am over stepping things a bit being new here---I gotta feel it out since things are not addressed totally in the TOS.

Basically what I am at here if it is family place and it is stated as so then it should be presented and kept as so.
If the statment is not accurate then it either needs to be held up or completley removed.
and if removed then no mention on this board being a family place.
Just hitting the family terminology that is used here.
If removing the Family potrayal then why even bother with saying profanity is not welcome.

One thing for sure---images in young eyes are impressionable(what are we telling our kids and family with images)----words can be forgotten but what we see is not forgotten so easily. It is imprinted in our minds.
Well This being my forum to moderate, I will chime in here. Tune if I say anything incorrect please correct me, and I am also sure he will chime in here.

Tune is the owner of this site and he has stated before that if he finds something inappropriate he will remove it or tell the owner to remove it. As far as I know this has not been done yet. As stated there is nothing inappropriate IMO of any of the avatars, there is no nudity and no worse than on tv or in any of the rc mags. Most of the mags have ads with half naked chicks and x treme rc rates hop up according to hot chicks. If there was a nude photo or something explicit I would agree.

This forum is growing and we are trying to keep it hassle free, but at the same time we are mostly adults on here. Tune and the mods want this to be a fun place and talk RC and other things in the lounge, we don't want it to be come sterile and no fun.

So if you find something inappropriate please Pm a mod or Mr Tune and he/we will look at it and take appropriate action.

IMO opinion your first post should have been a PM to Tune, would have been a better way to address this, since it is only directed to the mods only.
Mr. Tune Wrote:I would have modded any avatar I felt was inappropriate or one that lots of people complained about. No need to change them.

While yes going off topic was ok before, but I also didn't think the board would be this busy then either. Most of the offending material starts off when things get off topic severly. So we felt the best thing to do to address the situation is to try and keep things on topic. I don't see it as too much to ask Smile.

Besides, we do have a lounge here which is off-topic anyways. I harm in using it for those 10 pages of useless banter in 2 hours threads Smile.

This was taken from the please read me thread in the general RC thread.
Glade you can chim in.

I understand about PM'ing but at the same time I was looking to see if anybody else had the same thoughts on it.

I can understand this totally. When a forum grows steady or rapidly this is alomst unavoidable which is why I also mention to really look at the TOS more closely and attempt to cover areas before hand and not when it is too late.
Now with what you stated about most being adults----what about the rest that are not.
That is what you have to look at more so really. That small percentageof who are not adults.
Now your avitar is fine and we see ppl like that whereever we go. But there is another one that IMO is borderline and if that is okay then why not all of us have avitars with women in lingeie.
I guess another way to see where I am going is that I am attempting to be proactive.

If this gets to heated I can understand this thread being removed.
As far as the TOS goes that is something that Tune has to talk about. I just wanted to address this before he got to look at it and it gets out of hand.

In your last post you said "I understand about PM'ing but at the same time I was looking to see if anybody else had the same thoughts on it."

But in your first post you stated a question for the Mods. To me a question to the mods on a TOS question or something that should be addressed and handled in PM's.
Whos avatar is it that you find the most offensive ? You can PM you opinion on it to me or one of the other mods if you dont feel ike answering on the forum.

A couple weeks back, things did get out of hand and the owner and some of the mods are trying hard to get a baselins of rules set here on the board. While the majority of the users on this board are adults. I do understand your point and try to put myself in your position. Being that you have a daugther that is looking into getting into this hobby and I can see how avatars of women can be offensive.

Give Mr.Tune some time to work out all the bugs and I'm we'll all be happy in the end.

Rich.
Hello biodragen,

I appreciate your feedback and would like to offer some more information for you. If I had to give a rating to how I would like to see the site, it would be PG-13. To me that means, if it's allowed on network tv, it should be allowed here. Some of the avatars here that may be considered boarderline or racy, are no worse than what's on tv. Take a look at victoria secret commercials. I consider that more racy than what we have here. Written stuff should follow the same rules and images too. You'll hear things like 'ass' on tv, but you'll never hear 'f**k'. I feel that it is a fair policy, and our growth in the past few months show to me that it works great.

One thing to remember, decisions on this board are not final. Ultimately this a member supported board. Without them this site wouldn't be here. Members will, in the end, dictate many of the decisions. If there is a demand for it, it can happen.

A side note of kids reading the board. I know if I were a parent and my <inster young age here> year old want to surf the net, I guarantee he/she wouldn't on it unnattended. This is strickly my opinion and don't want to offend or pass judgement to anyone.

John 'Mr. Tune' Dimitropoulos
ChitownRC Owner and Operator
This is a very good forum, run and populated by conscience people. I have seen alot worse elsewhere. These guys do a good job moderating this place. Everything nowadays is borderline in someones mind making it difficult to run the gamut when it comes to opinions. I have children, one of them is old enough to visit this forum (although he doesnt, cause he is not allowed to post in forums yet). I have strict rules regarding what my kids can do online. I have electronic parental controls as well as my own mind as a parental control and thats where it starts and should start for any parent. With this in mind as parents (some of us) I believe anything inappropriate will be nipped in the bud before it becomes outta hand here. This is everybodys job, not just the mods and admins. I appreciate your candor and respect your opinion. But if a child comes here and their parents believe that the avatars are not to be viewed by them then their job is to control that ability to view this site, if they do this then they have done their job.
John, and others

Thank you for replying.
The last thing I want to do is make wave and upset ppl and get things heated.
I understand about what you say with PG-13 and television.
With that in mind My wife and I watch what our daughter views on television and the net.
She already had a run in with a pervert and we had a talking about it. She is learning as we go along with all this stuff.

Now if I point one out and with this topic in the open---then that person knows where it came from. So the best would be to remove this thread to find out or just look around.

cemeb4dk Avitar is fine and I would consider that the line to be drawn but getting more revealing and less clothing than that does not make it more "FAMILY".

I can gauruntee you this will come up again and again---I am willing to bet on it and it is a sure bet. With that in mind you will have a problem creap up faster than you realize.
Only then you will have to do something more drastic and then it gets heated with more person updet.
So really you are borderline on what is "FAMILY"
Family is more holesome term I would think but what we watch on the TV there are "FAMILY" stations that do not allow commercials like that as well.
So it is the term being used loosly here that this is a family place.

The stand I take on this is being the parent here.
You have avitars that are offensive IMO---my child will not be here. If you don't allow the revealing atire then she will make her self known. Sorry did not want that to sound threatening cuz it is not.

In time I know you will work on the TOS and it will not be easy I know.
It is your board and I know you will run it as you see fit.

I just wanted to bring something to the table....yes I guess I could have split this up between the general public and the Moderators as it is pointed out---thank you for making me realize this portion and I will be more appropriatly directed next time if there is a next time.

So far I do like this forum, I do not see really any issues than just what I mention with avitars.
I would love for my daughter to be here and learn some things but I will have to not allow it at this time. Some of it may be above her for sure but I am sure she can find someone to chat with here closer to her age. It would be nice to leaver her a little unattended here but I don't thinks so at the moment.

Again I am kewl and not upset just cautious when it comes to what my kid sees.
I was watching Nick (the channel) the other day with my 11 year old daughter. A commercial came on for a movie. The actress in the movie said
"yeah, this guy I date now, I think we had sex on every surface of my apartment"
I was appauled that a kid station like Nickelodeon would play a commercial like that. I seriously thought about not letting my daughter watch that station ever again. That was blatently promoting sex out of wedlock, and at my house, that is not allowed.

I personally like looking at the avatars here, (what man doesn't), but I think they are a bit beyond the borderline we are currently trying to set here. That's just my personal opinion on it.

Of course when me and the fam were riding down I55 towards the CHI I look up and what do I see? a victoria secret BILLBOARD with a lady in bra and panties. Then about a mile down the road I see a Calvin Klein billboard with a guy in his underwear. I don't think any of that stuff should be allowed in public, are kids not supposed to ride down the expressway now?

I have to admit though, I am superly over protective about my daughter and what she hears/sees. I may have a problem with being too protective (I've been told).

Anyone that comes to my house is not allowed to cuss around her and me and the wife don't cuss around her. I'm sure she cusses at school, what kid doesn't, but that's beside the point. The point is setting the right example, and being the role model you should be. If you cuss around my kid, that's disrespecting her, and me.

That's why you (very rarely) see my daughter at races or at Berwyn Bashes. I can't expect all those people to not cuss and not talk about what they want just cause she is there. That statement also proves the fact that "if you don't want your kid around it, don't bring them there".

Well that's my thoughts on it anyway
I know the movie you speak of.

You are right it is all over no matter where we go.
Then---Why add more to all of it then?
Why not go the opposite?

You are doing what you can the best you can and I do what I can as well but it is getting tougher and tougher.
So when it is said it is a "family place" then make it like one and just don't state it. Not just here but other places also would be nice.
I am not talking make it like Disney world or the Disney channel.
We should have a place to go that is like that with our kids with this hobby I would think.

With Sports games our kids are it is is asked that we refrein from foul language and if you do use it you do get the dirty looks from other parents like
"HOW DARE YOU" This is a family event.
Man being a soccer coach some parents take the game so seriously they argue with each other and I know it is worse with basball and football.

If so then really it is "if you can't beat them, Join them" is the direction things are heading these days. Sorry to say it is upsetting and we are the downfall of our own creation and exceptions to rules and what is borderline.

And we wonder why our kids are becomming more unruley as they grow up.
We subject them to this in public everywhere we go. We have little choice unless we lock them up and never let them out.

On another note...A pat on the back to all who replied

I am glad to see opinoins about it both ways and being done do in a clean way where we are not bashing each other.
edit: nevermind
If you're worried about some of the avatars on here, check out your user CP.

Excellent find rob, good job!
Wow rob, that is a good find.....And viola......Problem Solved
3 cheers for Rob.
Nice job Rob.
A very simple way to "Self moderate" the content on the boards, is in your user settings.

Once logged in, on the upper right corner, there is an option for "user cp" click that, then scroll down to "Thread display options". Under this heading, you can remove the check from the box "Show avatars", and the many user avatars will not be visable on your computer.

I have a 13 year old son, and I understand your concerns. But it is too hard for any one person to set an ideal standard, without being considered too lenient (sp) by some, and too strict by others.
I didn't see the second page... :o
Hooray for boobies!!!!!
