usually the motor will run erratic if it works at all. If you have to "push start" it to get the motor working, you need brushes.

If u goto pick up the truck and u burn your hand on the motor u need new brushes.

When the motor stops working. I once wore a set of brushes down to less than a 1/8 inch they where still working. It was a nub with a shunt I have some pictures of the brushes if anybody wants to see.
Now a days if I see them get to a 1/4 or so long I replace them.
