1/10 truck tire venting - 01-13-2007, 03:01 PM

I have heard that some guys SHOO-GOO the vent holes in the wheels and use a X-acto knife to cut small holes in the tires to provide venting.
Does anyone know what the performance difference is??
Where is the cut made? (sidewall or tread surface)
How big and how many?

This seems strange to me since it should 'weaken' the tire and it would more easily rip when it hits a tube, scrapes the wall, spectators.

Or am I all wrong and they are just pin sized holes with the point of the knife?

Just some questions from a guy that does not know..

Sounds like a lot of trouble to re-invent the wheel....

Thanx

having a hole in the tire allows dirt that works its way inside the tire to get flug out by centrifical force . I have never seen an issue with weakening of the tire .

Where on the tire do you put the venting hole(s)?

OK, I read the STICKY Tire glueing 101. According to guys responding there, inside tires don't need to be vented in the tire since there is not alot of loose dirt from the clay tracks.
I just thought there was some difference in performance of the tire with venting in the tire instead of/in addition to the wheel.
If it doesnt make a difference, I wont worry about it.

Thanks

I find that tires balloon a little less with vented tires (opposed to rims). They still balloon, but less.

Also it's better to use a leather punch to make a hole in the tire the size of a waist belt hole. Slits will cause tears easier. I didn't have a leather punch so I poked a hole in the tire with my hot soldering iron. The tire was loose at the time and not mounted.

I use an 1/8 inch drill bit in my dremel. I make 4 holes in the center of the tread part of the tire. 3, 6, 9, 12 (like a clock).

Using the drill bit in a dremel with light pressure makes a clean hole without jagged edges to be more prone to tearing.

I do this on MT tires, so if your running 1/10 scale, you might only need two or use a smaller bit.

I use a hollow brass rod, about 1/16" diameter, that I filed to a bevel edge as a punch. Back the tire with a block of wood and give it a tap, viola, a neat little hole.

Did you see the pix that Kevin posted last year? He probably poured a pound of dirt out of each tire....
