Tire Glueing 101 - 03-05-2006, 06:08 PM

OK first off this is for a friend and dont wanna hear crap about not being ADVANTAGE tires or foam LOL!!!

Im gluing up a set of tires for a friend and thought id take pics as i go.

OK first we need to get set up. Your going to need:

denatured alcohol
cloth
dremel or sand paper
and scisors.

1st. Wipe down everything with the alcohol. Rims beads and Tires beads.

2nd. We now need to prep the bead area of the tire and rim to take the "shine" off of it.

DREMEL BIT

BEFORE

AFTER

BEFORE

AFTER

CLEAN THE AREAS OF RIM AND TIRE

Now comes the FUN part.
My Dad likes to do glue jobs like this. Put the tire on and glue the out side
of the outer rim, then FLIP the tire inside out and glue the bead again on
the inside. YOUR TIRE WILL NEVER COME OFF lol...the one thing i DONT like about this is,
baking off the tires is nearly impossible and my way is just as good.

MOCK UP PICTURE OF GLUING FROM THE INSIDE

NOW MY WAY:

STUFF THE FOAM INTO THE TIRE AND USING YOUR 2 THUMBS, OCCILATE YOUR THUMBS TO FULLY SEAT THE
FOAMS. MOLDED IS ALOT BETTER THAN STOCK FOAM AT THIS.

STRETCH THE TIRE OVER THE RIM

TUG AT THE TIRE AND FOAM TO MAKE SURE IT IS SEATED CORRECTLY

OK ITS ALL ON, MAKE SURE IT ALL LOOKS EVEN

THIS IS THE GLUE I USE. FUSION I HEAR IS GREAT AS WELL. I LIKE THIS AS
IT COMES WITH THE NEEDLE TUBE FOR THE TIP. YOU CANT GET A GOOD GLUE JOB
WITH OUT IT IMO.

PULL THE BEAD BACK LIKE THIS

APPLY A SMALL STRIPE OF GLUE WAY DOWN IN THERE, DONT DO MORE THAN A INCH
AT A TIME, PREPING THE TIRES LIKE I HAVE SHOWN MAKES THIS A INSTANT BOND!!!

NOW PUSH DOWN ON THE BEAD TWORDS THE CENTER OF THE RIM, THEN KINDA ROLL
THE TIRE SO IT PUSHES THE GLUE UP TO THE EDGE OF THE RIM. DONE RIGHT YOU SHOULD
HAVE JUST ENOUGH TO OOZE OUT. IF THERE IS TOO MUCH GO EASIER ON THE GLUE.

OK ALL THE WAY AROUND AND YOU SHOULD END UP WITH THIS.

GO AROUND THE TIRE SLIGHTLY TUGGING ON IT LOOKING FOR MISSED AREAS LIKE THIS
AND PUT A DROP ON IT.

AS A FINAL DEAL, I LIKE TO TAKE THE GLUE AND "DRAW" A LINE AROUND THE
WHOLE TIRE TO SEAL THE BEAD AND TO KEEP DIRT OUT.

THATS IT.

Somthing i didnt cover is venting. I am doing this set in the rim as it will
be INDOORS and no dust. Out door would be in the tire.

Also there are other tricks you can do, like trimming the bead on the tire to
give it a rounder profile or adding weather stripping to the center of the rim only.

With the current molded foams out there, not really necessary.

Rim is just for normal vent..Not good for dusty loose tracks w/debris cause then stuff gets in your tires. You want to vent the tire when you do have loose dusty tracks with debris.

if you dont vent, tire may become bouncy like a ball. venting helps absorb inperfections in the surface.

Still good! The whole venting subject could be "tires 102".

For reference, how long would you estimate it took you to prep and glue the set?

thanx tune!

venting... someone on another forum asked why i did the INside and not the tire for indoor.

mainly if you ever use buggy grip or turpintine it will eat the foam a bit.
that i and i aways clean tires between heats and i can keep the water out a bit better if its
