From what I can tell is the site is either reaching its maximum level of users and timing out other connections until the user level drops below the maximum. Or there are permission errors occurring, where do to some reason the server will not respond to end users because their permission to access the site has become corrupted. |

It's not the network congestion that's causing the problem, it's the server resources. Back when I first started the site, I administered my own server. While the cost was pretty high (~$150/month) and I was on my own for updates , security, etc, but it was super fast all the time. About 6-7 months ago I switched to a shared hosting environment to cut down costs. Now I pay $50/month and I don't have to worry about anything other than running the site. The drawback is that I don't know how many other sites are on there along with me. What probably happened is that they filled it to the max and when the bigger sites on the server hit their peak traffic times it slows down everyone. IMO they are slacking in getting the bigger sites off the server and making everyone suffer.

Good info, John.
An since you aren't one to lean on anyone about it....users/members, please note the $600/yr that "someone" has to lay out to host this site. See "DONATE" button on the home page.....if you haven't lately. John, thanks for all you and the other admins do for this valueable site! |

Servers aren't cheap! lol. I do have a case lying around the house for one, if you decide to build your own. But I wouldn't mind donating a little money to help the site. But $150 a month, YIKES! I can't speak for all the members on here but I could deal with the server to busy messages, instead of putting you out!

I have to say, it happens to me about 20 times a day. It is really getting on my nerves, by I can deal with it if need be.
If you started running your own server again, I can donate $20 a month to the site. who else wants to step up and make a monthly donation of $5-$10-or even $20? Only thing I ask is, don't offer unless you are actually going to provide the money each month. We wouldn't want Tune planning out payment, then some people don't come through on the deal.

Gabe,
There are 477 members here, with maybe 50 that really are on ALOT. I would think even $2-3 a month, $25/year from a core group would cover most of it. If a very affordable $10/year were donated by a majority of the 477 members, it would be a done deal. If a mandatory $5/yr were levied against 477 members, it would be guaranteed! And who in this hobby can't afford another $5 for an "online magazine" with "live tech support" like you get here? We'll have to see how John and everyone who runs the site wants to go with it. I'm fine pitching in, as I already do, on a yearly donation basis. |
