RC18T/Brushless owners - 05-02-2006, 11:38 PM

Well, when I bought my new RC18T, the stock XPS ESC was messed up so I sent it in the Associated and asked for credit on the ESC,they one upped me and sent bunch of FT parts, Turnbuckles, wheel nuts, battery strap, and the blue dog bones. So I thought that was cool. But know I'm in the market for a new ESC, so I'm going to go brushless. Issue 127 of Xterme R/C has a great article on some of the mirco brushless systems. I leaning towards the tekin rage system. But I guess my real question is do I need to upgrade the spur gear (like get and aluminum one). I'm going with 6800kv motor for now.

Don't set the mesh to tight and you'll be okay.

Set the mesh right and it won't be a problem. just loose enough so there is a little play and it rolls nicely. Also imo, cut the 60t spur gear cover open on the bottom of the chassis. All of the strped spur gear problems I had were due to rocks and junk getting traped in that cover. Since I've completely opened the spur gear up I've not had any more problems. Just something to try if you have spur gear problems.

also the Tekin mini rage.. I'd stay away from it. I've read several people having problems with the controllers not being the best. They are not up to par with the controller software Vs Mamba and Quark controllers.

You've seen the brushless videos on my site.. the spur was stock, and we beat that truck up good! Have a Mamba system in it.. and never had a spur gear issue..

Now the diff's... that's a whole other story

Well thats good to know the spur should last. Know just have to aquire the system. I am going to go with the Mamba 6800kv system, but I can always buy a 8000kv motor later down the line.

You'll probaly stick with the 6800, that sucka will be super fast. Squid is right, your gonna go through diffs but, The spur gear will survive.

I just installed the Tekin 5.4kv in my Xray M18MT and its a handfull to control. Too much throttle on any surface will lose traction even while moving. They had some issues with the first Tekin's that were clipping, but they stated they updated the software and if it moves at a slow walk pace while just barely touching the throttle its ok, otherwise they are accepting returns and updating the units. Its my first BL setup and mini so I am not sure how it compares to the Mambas setup but make sure you run good batteries and Deans of course. I had an issue with one pack that I had to resolder (homemade packs) but worked perfectly afterwords. Good luck and enjoy it. Oh btw, still running plastic spur and pinion.
