JR Z650M Servo and Savage 4.6 - 04-13-2006, 07:27 PM

Okay gang, el jefe is back with another round of questions. Todays topic:

SERVOS

Got the Savage 4.6 sorted out (after brief flywheel issue, thanks all who helped me diagnose!) and broken in and wheelying. One issue has got me baffled now.

I have a JR Z650M on throttle and one on steering as well. The problem is with the one on throttle. Everytime I go out for a run at the end of the day when I get home the 3x10 screw that secures the servo horn to the servo is missing!

I replace with a new screw and check for tightness and it stays put. I go out and run and when I bring it in the screw is missing. After a couple of times, I looked into the servo and sure enough the top portion of the threads are stripped. I find a replacement gear kit on JR's site: JRPSGZ650

$18 bucks ain't bad, but I'm interested in correcting the problem causing this so I don't have to do it again. Any ideas why that screw keeps leaving?

Also thinking about calling JR and seeing if they'll do me a solid.

Kid in Hobbytown told me that for the trouble it's worth it'd be better to buy another servo than that rebuild kit, LOL, my wallet says that a little elbow grease is worth it. Servo is barely used and not even a good month old, used even less time than that.

Just get a longer and use some NON permanent thread lock? Just a little. All my servos (same setup as yours-650 on throttle and steering on revo) ave not had a problem with backing out screws. I've cut the wire in half on one, and that same one wouldn't work, so I let it sit for about 2 months, took it apart and put it back together, no changes and nothing new, and it worked. I like JR!

Oh and if you're not now, get some hex screws for that truck! You'll be able to get them tighter.

I was wondering if a little thread lock would be kosher for a servo. Good lookin' out REVO!! I was also thinking a longer screw too cause it didn't quite seem to be getting that deep in there. Good stuff man thanks.

yep a TINY drop of blue thread lock on all metal geared servos. Otherwise the screw will continue to fall out. A throttle horn that falls off during operation= runaway

Not if you have a throttle return spring setup.

Depends on the setup, some throttle returns are setup on the horn (to carb) which does no good if the horn pops off.

But you are correct if the throttle return doesn't include the horn in it's setup.

Any of you guys got a throttle mod recipe or will any flavor do the trick. That was something I had intended to look into as well.

Heres a pic of the mod using the lower part of the original servo arm... You just drill a hole in it right where the round "mould" mark is on it
