To give an example. I ran through over 5 gallons on my Mach .26 with the stock 3 shoe setup from hpi with no problems ever. That motor made crazy power too.

It takes ALOT of heat to melt a spur. Do as snakebite said and check for binding. Have you checked the brake disc/clutchbell spacing yet? That is one form of binding. Normally not a problem unless the spur gear and clutch bell are geared wrong.
