When everything is tightened up, there is a little play in the pinion gear. It can slide in and out just a tad in the housing. If you push it in, it'll bind and lock up. If you pull it out, everything will spin freely. Mine did that too when I was rebuilding my spare diffs a few days ago. I wouldn't worry about it too much. Once installed in the truck you'll be fine. Mine works .
